  •   Sempervivum 'Urmina' is a cold hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain regions of Europe and Asia Minor. It evolved in rocky, dry terrain with minimal moisture and naturally tolerates harsh outdoor conditions across much of North America.

'Urmina' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that blend burgundy and green tones, deepening to burgundy-red under full sun exposure. It spreads by producing small offset rosettes, called chicks, around the mother plant, gradually building a clustering mat over time. The structured geometry of each rosette and the color shift from green to burgundy creates a distinctive appearance in rock gardens and containers.

When the mother rosette matures, it sends up a flower stalk with small, star-shaped blooms before that rosette completes its life cycle. Cooler nighttime temperatures in spring encourage blooming, so leaving 'Urmina' outdoors through fall and winter naturally supports flowers.

'Urmina' tolerates balcony wind and rain with ease and handles heated indoor air without stress. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer or keep it in a sunny indoor spot year-round. It is safe around cats and dogs. Rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and sunny balconies are all suitable homes for this drought-tolerant succulent. It separates easily from offsets for propagation.

  •   Sempervivum 'Urmina' grows well in full sun and partial sun, with four to six hours of direct sunlight daily deepening leaf color from green to burgundy-red.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks indoors.

'Urmina' does best in fast-draining soil, ideally a gritty cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F at its hardiest to warm summer highs, making it a true frost-hardy perennial.

'Urmina' grows at a moderate pace and needs no regular fertilizer, though a single light feed in spring supports healthy offsetting.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. It also grows well in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and the mountainous regions of California, New Mexico, and Arizona.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Urmina' safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe around both cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if it gets too much water?
A: Overwatering causes root rot in Sempervivum 'Urmina', visible as mushy stems or leaves that feel soft and translucent. Always let the soil dry fully before watering again.

Q: How does 'Urmina' spread across a pot or garden?
A: It produces small offset rosettes, called chicks, around the base of the mother plant that you can gently separate and replant to expand your collection.

Q: Can it survive outdoors in winter?
A: 'Urmina' handles frost and cold without protection in USDA zones 3 through 8, surviving temperatures well below freezing across the northern and central United States.

Q: How much light does 'Urmina' need to develop its best color?
A: Less than four hours of direct sun results in more green foliage; optimal color development requires four to six hours daily.

Q: How long can it go without water?
A: 'Urmina' survives up to ten days without water, making it suitable for trips and homes with inconsistent watering schedules.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
