Hot Cocoa forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in chocolate-brown, bronze, and burgundy tones that deepen in cooler temperatures and bright sun. The fleshy, pointed leaves cluster in the classic hens-and-chicks habit, freely producing offsets around the mother rosette. The mocha-toned foliage is visually distinctive among bronze rosette succulents, and the open rosette structure shows visible signs of thirst as leaves soften slightly when dry.
Like most sempervivums, it produces star-shaped flowers on tall stalks from a mature rosette, typically in summer. A temperature drop at night encourages blooming, and the rosette that flowers will die back naturally while the surrounding offsets continue growing. It is pet-safe and non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Rotate Hot Cocoa occasionally for even, symmetrical growth, and keep it away from direct air conditioning or heating vents indoors. Move it outside in summer, leave it outside through autumn, and it tolerates frost with ease. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant handles wind and rain outdoors with no trouble, and it stays compact at 3 to 4 inches in diameter per rosette.
Sempervivum 'Hot Cocoa' grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, though intense south-facing windows may scorch leaves in summer.
Water it deeply every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings and reducing to once a month in winter.
Hot Cocoa grows best in a gritty, well-draining cactus and succulent soil blended with 30 to 50 percent perlite or coarse grit.
It tolerates a wide temperature range from around 25°F up to 90°F, making it a frost-hardy choice for outdoor growing year-round in temperate climates.
It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to approximately 40°F below zero. It grows outdoors across the northern tier from Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota through Michigan and Maine, and throughout the Midwest in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Missouri. It performs well in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast from Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont through Maryland and Virginia, and in higher elevations of the inland West from Wyoming and Colorado through Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
