Sempervivum Hirtum forms tight, geometric rosettes in forest green, with leaves edged in fine hairs. It grows in a clustering, spreading habit, sending out offsets that detach and root easily, which is why it earns the nickname hens and chicks roller. The spiky green rosette shape provides strong architectural character, and a single plant quickly becomes a wide-spreading colony.
When it blooms, Sempervivum Hirtum produces star-shaped flowers on upright stems, though each rosette flowers only once in its lifetime before giving way to surrounding offsets, so the colony always looks full and vital. The plant requires a cool night temperature drop to trigger the flowering cycle.
Move it outside in summer and keep it on a balcony through autumn; it handles wind and rain without trouble. This drought-tolerant succulent tolerates the dry heated air of indoor spaces during winter and is pet-friendly, safe for cats and dogs. It works well in rock gardens, container groupings, and raised beds where the spreading habit can expand freely.
