  •   Sempervivum 'Duke of Windsor' is a cold hardy drought tolerant succulent belonging to the houseleek family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe. This alpine succulent has adapted to harsh alpine conditions and is one of the hardiest hens and chicks varieties available for outdoor growing.

Duke of Windsor forms distinctive rosettes with apple green leaves that develop burgundy-red tips and edges, especially in cooler weather. The thick, fleshy leaves are pointed and densely packed, creating compact rosettes that typically reach 3-4 inches across. It produces offsets readily, forming attractive clustering colonies that spread naturally over time.

Duke of Windsor handles balcony wind and rain exceptionally well, though it needs cover from rain during winter dormancy. It tolerates dry heated air indoors and can move outside for summer growing. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Duke of Windsor works as a rock garden plant and grows well in containers for collectors seeking hardy outdoor succulents. It adapts to both direct sun and low-light conditions, and the clustering growth habit creates groundcover displays while individual rosettes work in alpine gardens and succulent arrangements. This frost hardy variety handles drafty spots and is pet-friendly and safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Duke of Windsor' grows well in full sun to partial sun conditions and adapts well to direct sunlight.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 10-14 days during the growing season.

Duke of Windsor does best in well-draining soil with a cactus and succulent potting mix or sandy garden soil.

It tolerates temperatures from 15°F to 85°F and survives frost easily, handling winter cold without protection.

Duke of Windsor grows slowly and produces offsets steadily throughout the growing season, requiring no fertilizer and growing well in poor soils naturally.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-9, surviving frost down to -20°F. It grows outdoors across most of the continental United States, including Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. It also grows outdoors in warmer zones throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, northern Georgia, northern Alabama, northern Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and southern regions where winters provide adequate chill hours.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum 'Duke of Windsor'?
A: During the growing season, check soil moisture before watering; in winter dormancy, water monthly or less as the plant enters a rest period.

Q: Is it safe for cats and dogs?
A: Sempervivum 'Duke of Windsor' is non-toxic and poses no toxicity risks to household pets.

Q: How quickly does it spread?
A: Duke of Windsor grows slowly but produces offsets steadily. Small colonies form within 1-2 years as the mother rosette generates baby plants.

Q: Can Duke of Windsor survive freezing temperatures without protection?
A: It survives temperatures down to -20°F; most climates in its hardiness range require no winter protection.

Q: How do you propagate it?
A: Separate the small offset rosettes that form around the mother plant and plant them immediately in well-draining soil; they root quickly.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
