It forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, blue-green leaves tipped in reddish-purple, creating a two-toned contrast across each plant. Individual rosettes stay compact, typically 2 to 4 inches across, with smooth, slightly glaucous leaf surfaces. As it clusters outward, it produces small offsets called chicks that fill in surrounding space.
Each rosette flowers once in its lifetime, sending up a tall stalk with star-shaped pink to reddish blooms in summer. The flowers produce pollen and can trigger mild allergies in sensitive individuals during bloom season. After flowering, that rosette dies back while the surrounding chicks continue growing, keeping the plant full and established.
Move it outside in summer or leave it outdoors year-round in its hardiness zones. It handles balcony wind and rain without trouble and tolerates dry heated indoor air. Tuck it into rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, or use it indoors under rotating placement for even rosette development.
