  •   Sempervivum 'Butterfly' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia where it grows in rocky alpine terrain. It has become popular among beginners and collectors for its exceptional hardiness and low-maintenance appeal.

'Butterfly' forms tight rosette clusters with softly textured, fuzzy leaves. The foliage shifts seasonally from rosy-green to deeper hues depending on sun exposure and temperature. It grows in an upright, clustering habit as daughter rosettes emerge around the mother plant, remaining relatively compact rather than sprawling wide.

'Butterfly' produces pollen during bloom, which can trigger mild allergen responses in sensitive individuals.

This alpine succulent thrives in outdoor rock gardens, containers, alpine troughs, and garden borders. Move it outside for summer, and it handles balcony conditions well. It can stay outdoors through autumn and winter in appropriate zones. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Propagation is straightforward: gently separate the chick rosettes from the mother plant and replant them directly in well-draining soil.

  •   Sempervivum 'Butterfly' grows well in bright indirect light but appreciates some direct sun outdoors, though intense south-facing windows indoors can scorch leaves.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10-14 days indoors.

'Butterfly' does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand at a 1:1 ratio.

It tolerates temperatures well below freezing, surviving down to approximately -30°F.

'Butterfly' grows at a moderate pace and needs little to no fertilizer, doing well with just a light, diluted feed once in spring if desired.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-8, tolerating frost as severe as -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round across the northern and central states including Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Connecticut. It also grows throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and into parts of California, Georgia, and South Carolina.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Butterfly' safe for pets?
A: Yes. It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What does overwatering look like on this plant?
A: Sempervivum 'Butterfly' develops yellow or discolored leaves when soil stays wet or light is too low. Both issues correct quickly once soil dries fully and the plant moves closer to a bright window.

Q: How do I propagate 'Butterfly'?
A: Gently detach the small chick rosettes that form around the mother plant and replant them in well-draining soil.

Q: How large does it grow?
A: Individual rosettes of 'Butterfly' typically reach 2-4 inches across, with the clustering habit gradually spreading wider as new chicks fill in around the mother plant.

Q: Can 'Butterfly' stay outdoors year-round?
A: It can stay outdoors through autumn and winter in zones 3-8. Provide cover during prolonged heavy rain to prevent the soil from staying saturated.

Q: What window direction works best indoors?
A: A bright, indirect spot near an east or north-facing window works well. Avoid intense direct sun from south-facing windows, which can scorch the leaves of 'Butterfly'.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
