  •   Sempervivum 'Reinhardt' is a hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. The genus evolved in rocky, poor soils at high elevations, which explains why Reinhardt grows well with virtually no maintenance today.

Reinhardt forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with apple green leaves tipped in dark color, deepening further with increased sun exposure. The fleshy, pointed leaves have smooth surfaces arranged in satisfying geometric patterns. It spreads by producing small offset "chicks" that cluster around the parent rosette, creating a dense, textural mat over time.

Like other Sempervivum species, individual rosettes are monocarpic in bloom, putting all their energy into a tall flower stalk before completing their life cycle while surrounding offsets continue growing. A nighttime temperature drop in spring can trigger blooming.

You can leave Reinhardt up to ten days without water. It tolerates balcony wind, rain, and temperature swings, dry heated indoor air, and drafty windowsills. Individual rosettes typically reach 2 to 4 inches in diameter, but the clumping habit means a single plant spreads into a wide mat over time. Propagation is simple: detach the small offset rosettes from the parent and press them into fresh, well-draining soil. It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Reinhardt' grows well in partial to full sun, with richer color developing under more direct sun exposure.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors and less in winter.

Reinhardt does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix combined with coarse perlite or grit to prevent root rot.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F at its coldest to warm summers, with genuine frost tolerance being a signature strength.

Reinhardt is a slow to moderate grower that needs no regular fertilizing, though a light, diluted feed in spring can support offset production.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8, tolerating frost down to approximately -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It also grows outdoors in Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Nevada, and parts of Texas and Georgia with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Reinhardt' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when to water?
A: Sempervivum 'Reinhardt' leaves will lose firmness when the plant needs water, then plump up again after you water. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Q: How large does Reinhardt get?
A: Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches in diameter, but the clumping habit means it spreads into a larger mat over time.

Q: What window placement works best?
A: Reinhardt develops deeper color in direct sun through a south or west-facing window, though it also grows in bright indirect light from an east or north-facing window.

Q: Can Reinhardt survive outdoors through winter?
A: It tolerates frost down to -40°F and grows year-round outdoors in USDA zones 3 to 8.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Detach the small offset rosettes from Reinhardt and press them into fresh, well-draining succulent soil where they root quickly.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
