  •   Sempervivum 'Red Rubin' is a frost hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia where it colonizes rocky slopes and alpine terrain. Bred for intense color and resilience, 'Red Rubin' belongs to the hens and chicks group.

It forms dense rosette clusters of thick, fleshy leaves in deep burgundy-red tones that intensify with sun exposure and cooler temperatures. Each rosette measures roughly 2 to 4 inches across, with pointed leaf tips and a tight, symmetrical form. As the mother rosette matures, it produces runners tipped with baby offsets, creating a carpet-like colony over time.

In summer, it sends up a tall stalk clustered with small star-shaped flowers in pink to reddish tones. After flowering, the parent rosette dies back naturally, but the surrounding offsets carry the colony forward. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

'Red Rubin' works well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and sunny balconies, handling balcony wind and rain with composure. Move it outside in summer, then leave it outdoors through autumn thanks to its exceptional frost tolerance. This succulent is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Red Rubin' grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, with direct sun deepening its red color.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter as soil dries completely between waterings.

'Red Rubin' grows well in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F up to 80°F, offering remarkable frost hardy performance across seasons.

'Red Rubin' is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer; a single light feed in spring is plenty.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to approximately -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Colorado, Utah, Nevada's higher elevations, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Red Rubin' safe for pets?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs and poses no risk in pet-owning households.

Q: How does the plant propagate?
A: Sempervivum 'Red Rubin' produces small offsets on short runners around the mother rosette; simply detach a rooted offset and replant it in fresh, well-draining gritty soil.

Q: How large does it get?
A: 'Red Rubin' forms rosettes 2 to 4 inches in diameter, though the clustering habit means a single plant spreads into a wide colony over years, staying compact enough for containers and rock gardens.

Q: Can 'Red Rubin' survive indoors?
A: It tolerates dry indoor air well and can move between indoors and outdoors seasonally, though outdoor placement in full sun produces the deepest color development.

Q: What triggers root rot in this plant?
A: Overwatering or soil that stays wet causes root rot; ensure the potting mix dries completely between waterings and never leave it sitting in water.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
