  •   Sempervivum 'Jeanne d'Arc' is a hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, descended from mountain species native to the alpine and subalpine regions of Europe and western Asia. These houseleek succulents evolved in harsh rocky terrain, which is why this variety remains so straightforward to grow indoors or outdoors today.

Jeanne d forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in red and green tones, with fleshy pointed leaves that deepen in color under bright light. It clusters steadily, producing offsets around the mother rosette to create a spreading mat over time. Each rosette has a sculptural geometry that appeals to container and rock garden collectors alike.

Like all Sempervivum, each individual rosette blooms once before dying, while the surrounding offsets continue growing. A noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures helps trigger flowering, so moving it outdoors in autumn or keeping it in a cool spot provides the seasonal cue it responds to. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Jeanne d excels in rock gardens, container displays, green roofs, and sunny balconies where it handles wind and rain without issue. This pet-friendly succulent poses no harm to cats or dogs. It grows in USDA Zones 3-8 and survives well below freezing.

  •   Sempervivum 'Jeanne d'Arc' grows well in partial sun to full sun, producing its best color with at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days indoors.

Jeanne d does best in fast-draining soil, a gritty cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It handles a wide temperature range from 65–80°F in summer down to well below freezing in winter.

Jeanne d is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, growing naturally in lean, nutrient-poor conditions.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8, tolerating winter temperatures as low as −40°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oregon. It also performs well in Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Idaho, Utah, and Washington, covering virtually every area of the continental United States outside the warmest Deep South and desert Southwest zones.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum 'Jeanne d'Arc'?
A: Every ten to fourteen days indoors, letting the soil dry fully between waterings. Outdoors in rainy seasons, ensure excellent drainage so roots never sit wet.

    Q: Is it pet friendly?
A: Sempervivum 'Jeanne d'Arc' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How frost hardy is Jeanne d?
A: It survives temperatures as low as −40°F in USDA Zones 3–8, making it one of the hardiest outdoor succulents for cold-climate gardeners.

Q: How fast does it grow and spread?
A: Jeanne d grows at a slow to moderate pace, gradually producing clusters of offsets called chicks around the main rosette to form a dense mat over a season or two.

    Q: How do I propagate Jeanne d?
A: Simply detach a mature offset from the mother plant, let the base dry for a day, then plant it directly into gritty, well-draining soil.

Q: Can it grow outdoors on a balcony?
A: Jeanne d handles balcony wind and rain without trouble and can stay outdoors year-round in most climates, provided containers have drainage holes.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
