  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Gold Bug' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain ranges of southeastern Europe. It grows naturally in rocky, exposed terrain where harsh conditions are standard, and has earned a devoted following among collectors for its extraordinary resilience and year-round color shifts.

'Gold Bug' forms tight, geometric rosettes with fleshy leaves in warm golden-green to amber tones that deepen to copper or bronze under full sun exposure. The rosettes cluster outward gradually in a low, ground-hugging mat, each one crisp and symmetrical. Unlike many hens and chicks types, it offsets slowly, which means each clump stays well-structured and compact over time.

In summer, 'Gold Bug' produces star-shaped flowers in soft yellow to pale gold on short stems rising from mature rosettes. Like all Sempervivum, individual rosettes are monocarpic and die after blooming, but the surrounding offsets continue the colony forward. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

'Gold Bug' suits rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and exposed balcony spots where wind and rain are facts of life. Move it outside in summer and it stays through autumn without skipping a beat. It handles drafty indoor air and dry heated rooms with ease, and is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Gold Bug' grows well in partial to full sun with at least four to six hours of direct sun daily for best color.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season and once a month or less in winter.

'Gold Bug' does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with 50 percent perlite or coarse grit.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F up to 90°F, with strong frost tolerance in established plantings.

'Gold Bug' is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a diluted balanced feed once in spring helps.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 5 through 9, tolerating winter lows near 20°F with good drainage. It grows outdoors in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. It grows well across Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It handles real winters from the Pacific Northwest through the mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Gold Bug' frost tolerant?
A: It is highly frost tolerant and hardy down to around 20°F in USDA Zones 5 through 9. Good drainage is the key to keeping it happy through cold winters.

Q: How often should I water during the growing season?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Gold Bug' stores water in its leaves, so every 10 to 14 days allows the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot faster than underwatering.

Q: Is 'Gold Bug' safe for pets?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe to display anywhere in your home.

Q: What window direction brings out the best color in this plant?
A: South and west-facing windows give 'Gold Bug' the strongest light exposure for deepest copper and bronze tones. East or west windows work if direct sun reaches it for at least four to six hours daily.

Q: How does 'Gold Bug' propagate?
A: It spreads by producing offsets that cluster around the parent rosette over time. Separate a healthy offset with roots attached and pot it in gritty, fast-draining soil.

Q: Does this plant need feeding?
A: 'Gold Bug' rarely requires fertilizer. A single diluted balanced application in spring is sufficient for slow to moderate growth.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
