  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Bros' is a cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to mountain regions of southeastern Europe. This alpine succulent has adapted to rocky alpine terrain and grows as a frost hardy perennial outdoors. It needs little ongoing attention once established.

'Bros' forms tight, geometric rosettes with thick, fleshy leaves in crimson red tones that deepen in full sun. The rosette grows in a clustering habit, gradually spreading into a dense mat of offsets that fills containers, troughs, and rock garden gaps. Leaf edges show fine ciliation, adding subtle texture to the bold, saturated tones of each rosette.

It produces flowers typical of the genus, though blooms are secondary to the foliage display. 'Bros' is pet safe, so you can display it freely on low shelves, patios, or anywhere curious cats and dogs roam. It does produce pollen and can carry allergens, which is worth knowing if you have sensitivities in the household.

Move it outside to a sunny balcony, rock garden, or container for summer and autumn. It survives up to ten days without water and tolerates dry heated indoor air. You can leave it outdoors through autumn and into winter across most of the United States.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Bros' grows well in partial to full sun, needing four to six hours of direct light daily for the deepest color.

Water it every two to three weeks in summer and reduce to once a month or less in winter.

'Bros' does best in fast-draining soil, such as a 50/50 blend of coarse grit and succulent or cactus compost.

It handles temperatures from around 5°F to 85°F and is genuinely frost tolerant.

'Bros' is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, at most a light feed in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to around 30°F at the colder end of its range. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, as well as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. It also performs well in the milder winters of California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum heuffelii 'Bros'?
A: Every two to three weeks during the growing season; cut back to monthly or less in winter. Overwatering causes root rot far more often than underwatering.

Q: Is this succulent pet friendly?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Bros' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How frost hardy is 'Bros'?
A: It survives temperatures as low as around 30°F in ideal conditions and can stay outdoors through autumn and winter across most of the US without protection.

Q: How much light does it need?
A: 'Bros' needs at least four hours of direct light daily. Position it where it receives partial to full sun; leaves shift from green toward deeper crimson with stronger light exposure.

    Q: How does 'Bros' propagate?
A: It produces offsets, or chicks, that cluster around the mother rosette naturally. Separate an offset with roots attached and pot it up or plant it directly into the garden.

Q: Is this a rare plant?
A: 'Bros' is considered a rare cultivar among succulent collectors, valued for its distinctive crimson red rosettes and cold hardy performance in USDA zones 4 through 9.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
