  •   Peperomia dolabriformis, also called Prayer Pepper, is a succulent houseplant native to the dry slopes of Peru, where it grows in rocky, well-drained soils with limited rainfall. It belongs to the Piperaceae family and stores water in its thick, folded leaves to survive long dry periods.

Each leaf is shaped like a half-cylinder folded lengthwise, with a translucent lime green "window" strip running along the top edge that allows light to reach the interior tissue. The leaves are pale green to gray-green, firm to the touch, and arranged along upright stems in a compact, branching form. Prayer Pepper stays small and tidy, typically reaching 8 to 12 inches tall, and the sculptural leaf structure sets it apart from most other peperomias.

Flower spikes appear occasionally on mature plants, rising on thin stalks above the foliage. They are small, pale, and without fragrance. Prayer Pepper is also pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor spaces.

You can leave it up to ten days without water, which suits anyone who travels regularly or keeps an unpredictable schedule. Move it outside in summer, but keep it sheltered from rain, since waterlogged soil and wet leaves can cause rot. Position it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as direct blasts of conditioned or heated air stress the leaves, though it handles the general dry warmth of a heated home without trouble. Prayer Pepper also grows well under office LED lighting and does well near a kitchen where ambient moisture is slightly higher.

  •   Peperomia dolabriformis grows well in bright indirect light, such as a few feet back from an east or west-facing window.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Prayer Pepper does best in a well-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite at a 2:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should be kept away from cold drafts below 50°F.

Prayer Pepper is a slow-growing compact plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, and Arizona. It can also spend summers outside in most other states as a container plant, brought back indoors before temperatures drop in autumn.
  • Q: Is Peperomia dolabriformis safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes. It is non-toxic and pet-friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does this plant actually need?
A: Peperomia dolabriformis does well a few feet from an east or west-facing window. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves, so keep it back or filtered with a sheer curtain.

Q: Can Prayer Pepper survive while I'm away on a trip?
A: You can leave it without water for up to ten days without harm.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant starting to look wrinkled or shriveled?
A: Prayer Pepper is likely underwatered. Check whether the soil is bone dry and water thoroughly, allowing full drainage before returning the pot to its saucer.

Q: How fast does Prayer Pepper grow?
A: Growth is slow. Expect a few new leaves per growing season rather than rapid vertical gain.

Q: Can this plant be grown in an office with no natural windows?
A: Prayer Pepper grows well under standard LED office lighting, as long as the lights are on for at least 10 to 12 hours per day.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
