  •   Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi 'Aurora Borealis' is a variegated trailing succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the highlands of Madagascar. It has become widely cultivated for its multicolored foliage.

Aurora Borealis is recognizable by its scalloped leaf edges, which display creamy white, soft pink, and lavender blush tones against a blue-green base. The leaves form loosely clustering rosettes along trailing stems, creating a full, layered growth habit with both upright and cascading branches that spreads across its container. It works well in hanging baskets and high shelves where its stems can trail freely.

In late winter to spring, it produces tubular coral-pink to reddish-orange blooms that emerge in pendulous clusters at stem tips. The flowers appear when nighttime temperatures drop into the low 50s°F. The plant produces pollen and may trigger allergies for those with sensitivities indoors.

Move Aurora Borealis outdoors to a sheltered spot in summer for a growth boost, but bring it under cover during rain and return it indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, and rotate it occasionally so all sides receive even light. This succulent stays safely out of reach of cats and dogs on a high shelf, as the foliage is toxic if ingested by pets.

  •   Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi 'Aurora Borealis' grows well in bright indirect light to partial or direct sun, ideally near an east or west-facing window.

Water it every 10-14 days in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Aurora Borealis does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for excellent drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and requires protection from frost below 50°F.

Aurora Borealis is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating minimum temperatures around 25-30°F with brief exposure only. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also be grown outside seasonally along the Gulf Coast, the coastal Pacific Northwest in Oregon and Washington, and in the warmer lowland areas of New Mexico and Arkansas with frost protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi 'Aurora Borealis'?
A: The growing season calls for watering every 10-14 days; winter watering drops to every 3-4 weeks. Overwatering causes root rot faster than underwatering, so ensure soil dries out completely between waterings.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi 'Aurora Borealis' is toxic to cats and dogs and should be kept well out of reach. A high shelf or hanging basket is the easiest way to protect curious pets.

Q: Can Aurora Borealis scorch in direct sun?
A: Intense afternoon sun through a south-facing window can scorch the leaves. Use a sheer curtain as a buffer if bright direct light lasts several hours daily.

Q: What window placement works best for growth?
A: Aurora Borealis grows strongest near an east or west-facing window where it receives several hours of bright light without harsh afternoon rays.

Q: How do I propagate Aurora Borealis?
A: Cut a stem and let it callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent mix. New roots typically establish within a few weeks in warm, bright conditions.

Q: Does it need cooler temperatures to bloom?
A: Aurora Borealis requires a drop in nighttime temperatures into the low 50s°F to trigger flowering. Keeping it in a cooler room overnight for several weeks usually initiates the bloom cycle in late winter.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
