  •   Haworthia Coarctata var. Tenuis is a slender, columnar succulent in the family Asphodelaceae, native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It grows among rocky outcrops in dry, scrubby terrain, where it receives filtered light and endures long dry periods between rains.

The leaves are narrow, dark green, and covered in raised white tubercles arranged in neat rows along each surface. They stack tightly around a central stem in a cylindrical column, rather than spreading into a flat rosette. Each leaf curves inward slightly at the tip, and mature plants can offset at the base to form small clusters over time.

Haworthia Tenuis produces slender tubular flowers on long, wiry stalks, typically white with faint green or pink striping. Blooms appear in autumn to winter, though a drop in nighttime temperature encourages the plant to flower. It does not bloom every year under consistent indoor conditions without that seasonal temperature shift.

You can leave it up to ten days without water, which suits most travel schedules without any adjustments. Move it outside for the summer months, but cover it from rain or position it under an overhang. Haworthia Tenuis fits well inside a terrarium and grows under standard office LED lighting without stalling. This plant is pet-friendly. It releases oxygen at night, and the leaves wilt slightly when the soil has been dry for too long. Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light. It is a rare collector find among slender haworthia succulent growers who seek the more unusual columnar forms.

  •   Haworthia Coarctata var. Tenuis grows well in bright indirect light and tolerates medium light under office LEDs. Keep it away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, letting the soil dry out fully between sessions. Cut back to once a month in winter.

Haworthia Tenuis does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand at a roughly 50/50 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F indoors. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, though it tolerates dry heated air without leaf damage.

Haworthia Tenuis is a slow-growing succulent that adds only a few inches per year. Feed it once in spring and once in midsummer with a diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in southern California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina. It can also stay outside through autumn in zone 9b regions before nighttime temperatures drop below safe thresholds.
  • Q: Is Haworthia Coarctata var. Tenuis safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. No harmful compounds are present in the leaves or sap.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Haworthia Coarctata var. Tenuis most often yellows from overwatering. Check that the soil drains completely between waterings and that the pot has drainage holes.

Q: Can Haworthia Tenuis survive a 10-day trip without watering?
A: Yes, it handles that stretch without any issue as long as the soil was not already wet when you left. Water thoroughly the day before you go, then let it dry out fully on return.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Haworthia Tenuis offsets naturally at the base. Separate a rooted offset from the mother plant, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then pot it into dry gritty mix and wait a week before first watering.

Q: Does Haworthia Tenuis need a special setup for a terrarium?
A: Open or mesh-lid terrariums work well since the plant needs airflow and low humidity. Avoid fully sealed glass containers, which trap moisture and can rot the roots.

Q: Why is my plant not blooming indoors?
A: Haworthia Tenuis needs a consistent drop in nighttime temperature in autumn to trigger flowering. Moving it to a cooler room at night, around 50°F to 55°F, for several weeks is the most reliable way to prompt a bloom cycle.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
