  •   Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to rocky, semi-arid regions of Mexico. Like all echeverias, it evolved in conditions of bright sun, low rainfall, and excellent drainage, which makes it remarkably adaptable for home growers. This dark-edge rosette is increasingly sought after by collectors and beginners alike.

'Ebony' forms a tight, symmetrical rosette of thick, waxy gray-green leaves tipped with dramatically dark, almost black edges. The leaf tips are sharply pointed, adding tension to the plump, sculptural form. Rosettes typically reach 4 to 6 inches across, and as a clustering grower, it gradually produces offsets that fill out a container over time.

It produces slender, arching bloom stalks in late spring to summer, bearing small reddish-orange flowers. Blooming is triggered by a nighttime temperature drop, so moving it somewhere cooler in the evenings during late winter can encourage flowering. The flowers produce pollen, so keep that in mind if household members have seasonal sensitivities.

'Ebony' works on sunny windowsills, in compact rosette succulent dish gardens, and in summer patio displays. Move it outside once temperatures are consistently warm, and cover it from rain to protect the leaves and prevent rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, ideally near a south or east-facing window.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days in summer and reduce to once a month in winter, letting soil dry fully between waterings.

'Ebony' performs best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite at a 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

'Ebony' grows at a slow to moderate pace and benefits from a light, diluted succulent fertilizer once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best where winters stay mild. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and Louisiana. In the warmer coastal stretches of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Oregon, it grows outdoors with minimal winter protection during light cold snaps.
  • Q: Is Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Echeveria agavoides 'Ebony' propagates easily from leaf cuttings or by dividing the offsets it produces as it clusters over time. Allow cuttings to callous for a day or two before placing them on dry succulent mix.

Q: Why are the leaves on 'Ebony' turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves stem from overwatering or insufficient light. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and move it to a brighter spot.

    Q: Should I rotate it?
A: Rotating 'Ebony' a quarter turn every week or two ensures even light exposure and keeps the rosette growing symmetrically.

Q: Does 'Ebony' need frequent watering?
A: No, it has drought tolerance and survives extended dry periods. Water only when soil is completely dry.

    Q: Is it considered rare?
A: 'Ebony' is considered rare compared to common nursery echeveria varieties, sought after by collectors for its near-black leaf tips and dark edge rosette form.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
