  •   Echeveria setosa var. minor, also called Mexican Firecracker, is a compact fuzzy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountains of Puebla and Oaxaca in Mexico. It grows naturally at high elevations in rocky, well-drained terrain with strong seasonal temperature swings.

The rosette is dense and low-growing, formed by spoon-shaped blue-green leaves covered in fine white bristly hairs. Each leaf tip carries a small reddish point, and the overall form stays tight and compact, rarely spreading beyond four to five inches across. The fine hairs catch light across the entire leaf surface.

In late spring to early summer, it sends up a slender arching stem bearing tubular red-and-yellow flowers tipped in red. A nighttime temperature drop in the weeks before spring triggers blooming, so cooler nights in late winter help the plant set buds. The flowers attract hummingbirds when grown outdoors.

Move it outside for the summer months, but keep it covered or sheltered from rain, as the hairy leaves trap moisture and can rot. It tolerates the dry heated air of indoor environments and is also safe around cats and dogs. Rotating the pot every week or two keeps the rosette growing evenly rather than leaning toward the light source. This plant is pet friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Echeveria setosa var. minor grows best in bright direct or indirect light, at least four to six hours per day.

Water it every ten to fourteen days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out fully between waterings.

Echeveria setosa var. minor does best in a gritty cactus and succulent mix with added perlite for fast drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

Echeveria setosa var. minor is a slow-growing compact rosette; feed it once in spring and once in summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11b, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and along the Gulf Coast. It also survives autumn outdoors in parts of zones 8b and 9a where brief dips stay above freezing.
  • Q: How much light does Echeveria setosa var. minor need indoors?
A: A south- or east-facing window works well. In a south window, watch for white or brown dry patches on the leaf tips, which appear when the sun is too intense through glass for extended hours.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Echeveria setosa var. minor leaves will wrinkle or feel slightly soft when the plant is dry. Check the top inch of soil first, and if the leaves are plump and firm, skip the watering.

Q: Is Echeveria setosa var. minor safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if I overwater this succulent?
A: Echeveria setosa var. minor is sensitive to excess moisture, especially at the base of the rosette. Overwatering causes the lower leaves to turn mushy and translucent, and root rot can follow quickly in soil that stays wet.

Q: Does Echeveria setosa var. minor need special treatment to bloom?
A: A drop in nighttime temperatures in late winter, down toward 45°F to 50°F, helps trigger bud development. Keeping it near a cool window away from heater vents during that period supports flowering.

Q: How big does this succulent get?
A: Echeveria setosa var. minor stays small, typically reaching three to five inches across at maturity. It is a slow grower, so it holds its compact size for a long time.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
