    •   Echeveria Preta is a rare dark succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. It belongs to the large and varied Echeveria genus, which includes hundreds of species adapted to rocky, well-drained hillsides with strong seasonal light.

        'Preta' forms a tight rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that range from deep purple to near-black depending on sun exposure. The leaf tips are slightly pointed, and the surface has a smooth, powdery farina coating that deepens in color under bright light. Rosettes typically reach 3 to 5 inches across at maturity.

        'Preta' produces coral to orange-pink bell-shaped flowers on slender arching stems in spring and early summer. A distinct drop in nighttime temperature encourages blooming, so placing it near a cooler window in winter can help trigger a flower spike. It releases oxygen at night, which sets it apart from many other common houseplants.

        Rotate 'Preta' a quarter turn every week or two so all sides receive even light and the rosette stays symmetrical. Keep it away from direct air conditioning or heating vents, though it handles the dry air that comes with heated indoor spaces. You can move it outside for summer, but cover it or bring it under shelter when rain is expected, as excess moisture on the leaves and in the soil can cause rot. It is pet-friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water.

It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and parts of Georgia and South Carolina. It also grows outdoors in Louisiana, New Mexico, and coastal areas of Oregon and Washington where winters stay mild.
