  •   Echeveria Preta is a rare dark succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. It belongs to the large and varied Echeveria genus, which includes hundreds of species adapted to rocky, well-drained hillsides with strong seasonal light.

'Preta' forms a tight rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that range from deep purple to near-black depending on sun exposure. The leaf tips are slightly pointed, and the surface has a smooth, powdery farina coating that deepens in color under bright light. Rosettes typically reach 3 to 5 inches across at maturity.

'Preta' produces coral to orange-pink bell-shaped flowers on slender arching stems in spring and early summer. A distinct drop in nighttime temperature encourages blooming, so placing it near a cooler window in winter can help trigger a flower spike. It releases oxygen at night, which sets it apart from many other common houseplants.

Rotate 'Preta' a quarter turn every week or two so all sides receive even light and the rosette stays symmetrical. Keep it away from direct air conditioning or heating vents, though it handles the dry air that comes with heated indoor spaces. You can move it outside for summer, but cover it or bring it under shelter when rain is expected, as excess moisture on the leaves and in the soil can cause rot. It is pet-friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Echeveria Preta grows best in bright indirect light, with some morning direct sun from an east-facing window.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, letting the soil dry completely between waterings; reduce to once a month in winter.

'Preta' does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix, with roughly 50% inorganic grit to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F indoors and should not be exposed to frost or temperatures below 40°F.

'Preta' is a slow-growing rosette succulent; feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F with brief cold exposure. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and parts of Georgia and South Carolina. It also grows outdoors in Louisiana, New Mexico, and coastal areas of Oregon and Washington where winters stay mild.
  • Q: How much light does Echeveria Preta need indoors?
A: An east or west-facing windowsill works well. A south-facing window can scorch the leaves if the rosette sits directly against the glass, so keep it a foot or two back or use a sheer curtain.

Q: How often should I water this succulent?
A: Echeveria Preta wilts slightly and the leaves feel softer when it needs water. Check the soil before watering rather than following a strict schedule, and always let it dry out completely before watering again.

Q: Is 'Preta' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: 'Preta' propagates easily from individual leaves or offsets. Gently twist a healthy leaf free from the base, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then lay it on dry cactus mix and mist lightly every few days until roots appear.

Q: Can 'Preta' survive while I'm traveling?
A: Water it thoroughly the day before you leave and it will hold without any watering for up to ten days.

Q: Why is this succulent considered rare?
A: 'Preta' is harder to source than most common Echeveria varieties because of its unusually dark near-black leaf color, which places it in higher demand among collectors than standard green or pastel rosette types.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
