  •   Echeveria Dark Vader is a compact rosette succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to semi-arid regions of Mexico. It is considered a rare cultivar, sought after for its unusually dark purple-black leaf coloration.

'Dark Vader' forms a tight, symmetrical rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that range from deep purple to near-black, often with a subtle dusty coating called farina. The leaf tips are slightly pointed, and the rosette typically stays compact, spreading only a few inches across. In strong light, the coloration deepens toward black, while lower light can shift it to a cooler, dark violet tone.

'Dark Vader' can produce slender flower stalks in spring or summer, bearing small bell-shaped blooms in coral or orange tones that contrast against the dark foliage. It typically needs a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger blooming. Flowering is not guaranteed every year, but when it does bloom, the stalks rise several inches above the rosette.

Move it outside for the summer months, but keep it sheltered from rain since standing water in the rosette can lead to rot. Rotate the pot every few weeks so each side receives even light exposure. 'Dark Vader' is pet-friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water, which suits households with irregular schedules. It wilts slightly when dry, which is a clear visual cue that it is ready for its next watering.

  •   Echeveria Dark Vader grows well in bright indirect light or a few hours of direct morning sun each day.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

'Dark Vader' does best in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, ideally blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

'Dark Vader' is a slow-growing cultivar; feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11b, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before cold damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and other warm-climate states within those zones. It can also stay outside through autumn in milder parts of zone 9 where frosts arrive late.
  • Q: How much light does Echeveria Dark Vader need indoors?
A: A bright east- or west-facing windowsill works well. South-facing windows with intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, so place it a foot or two back from the glass if that is the only option.

Q: Is this succulent safe for cats and dogs?
A: Echeveria Dark Vader is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: Can 'Dark Vader' handle being near a drafty window or an AC vent?
A: It is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning units and the dry blasting air from heaters placed nearby. A spot away from vents is better, though it does tolerate normally dry heated indoor air without trouble.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: 'Dark Vader' wilts slightly and the lower leaves may feel softer than usual when the soil has been dry long enough. Check the soil with your finger before watering.

Q: How fast does 'Dark Vader' grow, and will it stay small?
A: It grows slowly and stays compact, typically no more than a few inches in diameter at maturity. Expect gradual growth over months rather than weeks.

Q: Can this succulent be propagated at home?
A: 'Dark Vader' can be propagated from individual leaves or offsets that form at the base of the rosette. Lay leaf cuttings on dry succulent mix and mist lightly every few days until small rosettes begin to appear.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
