  •   Schefflera Variegated, also called Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a tropical houseplant from the Araliaceae family, native to Taiwan and parts of Southeast Asia. It grows naturally in warm, humid forest environments and has been widely cultivated as an indoor plant for its palmate leaves and cream and yellow variegation.

Each leaf is made up of several oval leaflets arranged in a spoke pattern around a central stem, much like the ribs of an umbrella. The variegation runs in irregular patches of cream, yellow, and green across the leaf surface, with each leaf carrying a slightly different pattern. Schefflera Variegated grows in an upright, bushy form with woody stems that develop over time.

Indoor specimens rarely flower, so it is grown almost entirely for its foliage. As an air purifying plant, it filters formaldehyde and other toxins from indoor air and naturally adds moisture to the surrounding environment through transpiration. Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure.

Place it near a kitchen where ambient moisture from cooking helps maintain the humidity it needs. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heaters, as direct airflow dries out the leaves. Schefflera Variegated can move outside for the summer months, though it needs cover from heavy rain and shelter from a south-facing window that could scorch the leaves. The sap can irritate skin and paws on contact, cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed on a high shelf away from small children.

  •   Schefflera Variegated grows well under bright indirect light, including office fluorescent and LED lighting.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Schefflera Variegated does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil combined with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from open windows.

Schefflera Variegated is a moderate grower and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay above 35°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and southern Texas. It also grows outdoors in Arizona, Louisiana, and coastal Georgia during the warmer months of the year.
  • Q: How sensitive is Schefflera Variegated to being moved indoors?
A: It can drop leaves when relocated, so choose a permanent spot and leave it there once settled.

Q: Can it survive while I'm away on a trip?
A: Schefflera Variegated can go up to ten days without watering, so a short trip away won't stress it provided the soil was moist before you left.

Q: Is Schefflera Variegated safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, and the sap can irritate paws and skin on contact, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: What does overwatering look like in this plant?
A: Schefflera Variegated will develop yellowing leaves and soggy stems if watered too frequently, and the roots can rot if the soil stays wet for extended periods.

Q: Where is the best spot indoors for Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree?
A: A position near a kitchen window or bathroom works well, as the ambient moisture helps maintain the high humidity it needs, just avoid placing it near AC or heating vents.

Q: Does it wilt when it needs water?
A: Yes, Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree droops slightly when the soil has dried out enough that it needs water, so check the top inch of soil and look at the leaves together.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
