  •   Schefflera Arboricola Variegated, also called Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a tropical shrub native to Taiwan and Hainan, where it grows as an understory plant in warm, humid forests. It belongs to the Araliaceae family and has been widely cultivated as a compact indoor shrub prized for its patterned foliage and adaptable growth habit.

The leaves grow in circular clusters of seven to nine leaflets arranged around a central stem, each one glossy and oval-shaped with irregular patches of yellow and green. Some leaflets are almost fully yellow, others carry just a few cream or lime-green splashes across a deeper green base. New growth emerges bright yellow before settling into the two-tone pattern that makes this schefflera arboricola so recognizable among variegated foliage houseplants. Indoors, the stems build into a compact, multi-branched form that fills out steadily over time.

Schefflera Arboricola Variegated rarely flowers when grown indoors, and blooms are not a feature most growers encounter. It does filter indoor air, including formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, working steadily in the background as a functioning air purifying plant. Moisture from a nearby kitchen keeps humidity levels naturally higher around it, which suits its tropical origins.

Rotate it every few weeks so each side receives consistent light and the growth stays even rather than leaning toward the window. In summer, move it outside to a sheltered spot with bright indirect light, then bring it back in before temperatures drop in autumn. It reacts to being relocated, often dropping a few leaves as it adjusts, so once you find a stable spot indoors, leave it there. Keep it away from heating vents and air conditioning units, as the dry or cold blasts cause leaf drop and stress. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to it: the sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the plant should not be eaten. A high shelf works well for both display and keeping it out of reach.

  •   Schefflera Arboricola Variegated grows best in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves.

Water it every ten to fourteen days, allowing the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings. It wilts slightly when dry.

Schefflera Arboricola Variegated does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and a small amount of bark or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and drops leaves quickly when exposed to cold drafts or sudden temperature shifts.

Schefflera Arboricola Variegated grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay above 50°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, and coastal areas of Louisiana and Georgia. In cooler states, it overwinters well inside a warm, bright room.
  • Q: How much light does Schefflera Arboricola Variegated need indoors?
A: East or west-facing windows work well. A south window can scorch the leaves, so keep it back from the glass or use a sheer curtain to filter the light.

Q: How do I know when to water it?
A: Schefflera Arboricola Variegated will droop slightly and the leaves lose a little firmness when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top few inches of soil before watering rather than going by a fixed schedule alone.

Q: Is Schefflera Arboricola Variegated safe to have around pets?
A: It should be kept out of reach of cats and dogs. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and eating any part of the plant can cause problems.

Q: Why is my plant dropping leaves after I moved it?
A: Schefflera Arboricola Variegated is sensitive to being relocated and will often shed some leaves as it adjusts to a new position. Leaf drop usually slows once it settles in.

Q: Can Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree go outside in summer?
A: Yes, move it to a sheltered outdoor spot once overnight temperatures are reliably above 55°F. Bring it back inside before the first cold nights arrive in autumn.

Q: How big does it get indoors?
A: Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree typically reaches two to four feet tall as a houseplant, though it can grow taller with regular feeding and good light over several years.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
