  •   Pleiospilos Nelii, also called Split Rock, is a rare mesemb succulent from the arid rocky plains of South Africa's Karoo region. This drought-tolerant collector plant evolved to mimic the quartz pebbles and stones surrounding it, developing a cleft appearance that makes it recognizable among architectural succulents.

The plant grows as a compact clumping body of just two to four thick, rounded leaves split down the center, creating that iconic stone-like silhouette. Leaves are forest green with heavily speckled, granite-like texture and the entire plant stays low and upright, rarely exceeding two to three inches tall.

Pleiospilos Nelii produces large, daisy-like flowers in shades of golden yellow to orange, typically blooming in autumn or winter when nighttime temperatures drop. The blooms are surprisingly showy relative to the plant's compact size, and a night temperature drop triggers the flowering cycle. Keeping it in a room with natural seasonal temperature variation encourages blooming.

Pleiospilos Nelii is pet-safe, making it a suitable choice for households with cats and dogs. Move it outside for the summer, but provide cover from rain since excess moisture is its primary vulnerability. It is sensitive to being moved frequently and to air from AC or heaters blowing directly on it. A stable, sunny spot will sustain this slow-growing succulent for years.

  •   Split Rock Pleiospilos Nelii Cactus grows well in bright indirect light to full direct sun, with four to six hours of morning sun daily.

Water it every two to three weeks during the growing season and reduce to once monthly or less in winter.

Pleiospilos Nelii does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of 50 percent coarse sand or perlite blended with cactus or succulent soil.

It prefers temperatures between 50 and 85°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Pleiospilos Nelii is a slow grower that needs only a light balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early autumn.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and Louisiana. It also performs well in warmer pockets of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and along the Oregon and Washington coasts where winters stay mild.
  • Q: Is Split Rock Pleiospilos Nelii Cactus pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

    Q: What causes yellowing leaves?
A: Split Rock Pleiospilos Nelii Cactus yellows from overwatering or poor drainage. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings and confirm your pot drains freely.

Q: How do I know if Pleiospilos Nelii needs water?
A: The leaves will wilt slightly when dry.

Q: Can direct sun damage it?
A: Pleiospilos Nelii can scorch in an intense south-facing window with no airflow during peak summer heat, though it generally handles bright light well.

Q: How do I propagate Split Rock?
A: The easiest method is division when the clumping plant produces offsets. Carefully separate them, allow the cut to callous for several days, then plant in dry gritty soil.

Q: How large does it get?
A: Split Rock typically stays under three inches tall, though a mature clumping specimen can spread slightly wider over several years.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
