  •   Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' Variegated, also called Variegated Green Velvet Alocasia, is a rare tropical aroid native to the rainforests of the Philippines. It belongs to the Araceae family and grows naturally on the shaded forest floor, where humidity stays high and light filters through a dense canopy.

The leaves of 'Frydek' are deep green with a velvety, suede-like texture and prominent white veins running across the surface. Chimeric variegation produces irregular creamy-white or pale yellow sectors across some leaves, so no two leaves look the same. The arrowhead-shaped leaves can reach up to 18 inches long on upright stems, and the plant forms a compact, upright rosette habit.

Confirmed flower details for this cultivar are limited, but it can produce a typical aroid spathe and spadix under ideal conditions indoors. The plant is considered a collector plant partly for its chimeric variegation, which is unstable and cannot be reliably reproduced from seed, making each specimen one of a kind among rare tropical aroids.

'Frydek' is sensitive to being moved, so choose a permanent spot before bringing it home. It thrives near kitchen moisture and does well placed on a high shelf, which also keeps it out of reach of pets and small children. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant should not be nibbled or eaten by cats, dogs, or toddlers. It needs cover from rain if placed on a porch, and it can move outside for summer in warm climates as long as it stays sheltered.

  •   Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' Variegated grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, letting the top inch of soil dry between sessions.

'Frydek' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and suffers below 60°F.

'Frydek' is a slow to moderate grower; feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F to 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, and parts of southern California and southern Texas. It overwinters outdoors in Puerto Rico and other warm US territories in those zones.
  • Q: Is Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' Variegated safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf out of their reach.

Q: How do I know if my plant needs more humidity?
A: Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' Variegated will show crispy leaf edges when the air is too dry. A humidifier nearby, a pebble tray with water, or placement near kitchen steam all help maintain the moisture level it needs.

Q: Why is 'Frydek' so expensive compared to other alocasias?
A: The chimeric variegation is genetically unstable and cannot be reproduced reliably from seed, so each variegated plant must be propagated vegetatively, and not every offset carries the pattern.

Q: What happens if I put it in a south-facing window?
A: 'Frydek' scorches in direct sun from a south window, leaving brown or bleached patches on the velvet surface. A few feet back from an east or west window works better.

Q: Is Variegated Green Velvet Alocasia good for a terrarium?
A: Younger, smaller specimens can work in a large terrarium where humidity stays consistently high. As it grows, the leaf size and upright stems will eventually outgrow most enclosures.

Q: How do I know when my plant is thirsty?
A: Variegated Green Velvet Alocasia wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before each watering session.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
