  •   Stenocactus multicostatus, also called Brain Cactus, is a rare drought-tolerant cactus native to the rocky hillsides and desert grasslands of central and northern Mexico. It belongs to the Stenocactus genus within the Cactaceae family and grows well in thin soils with intense sun and minimal rainfall in its native habitat.

Its densely packed, wavy ribs ripple across the globe-shaped body like the convolutions of a brain. The green body is studded with clusters of slender, often flattened spines that add sculptural appeal to any cactus collection. Single plants stay compact, though mature specimens develop a clustering habit, producing offsets that create a fuller, textured display over time.

It produces funnel-shaped flowers in shades of white to pale lavender with a violet midstripe, appearing in late winter to early spring near the crown. Blooms are triggered by the natural drop in nighttime temperatures, so allowing cooler nights during the dormant season encourages flowering.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer to soak up full sun, but shelter it from heavy rain to prevent root rot. The spines mean it should be placed on a high shelf away from small children, though it is completely pet-friendly for both cats and dogs. Rotate it regularly for even, symmetrical growth and keep it away from air conditioning or heater vents that blast drying drafts.

  •   Stenocactus multicostatus Brain Cactus grows well in partial to full sun with several hours of direct light daily from a bright south- or west-facing window.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer, reducing to once a month or less in fall and winter.

Stenocactus multicostatus does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse grit for sharp drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50-90°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop near freezing.

Stenocactus multicostatus is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a balanced, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer applied once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F with dry conditions. It grows outdoors in warm, dry regions including California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, and Louisiana, as well as parts of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Gardeners along the Oregon coast and in sheltered microclimates of zone 9 can also grow it outdoors with proper rain cover and frost protection during cold snaps.
  • Q: How often should I water Stenocactus multicostatus Brain Cactus?
A: The watering schedule shifts with the seasons. During spring and summer, water every 2-3 weeks when the soil dries completely. In fall and winter, reduce frequency to once a month or less as growth slows and water needs drop.

Q: Is Stenocactus multicostatus Brain Cactus safe to keep around pets and small children?
A: It is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, but the spines make it best placed on a high shelf out of reach of curious pets and small hands.

Q: What light does Stenocactus multicostatus need indoors?
A: Place it in a bright south- or west-facing window where it receives several hours of direct sunlight daily. Low light causes weak growth and prevents flowering.

Q: How large does the plant grow?
A: Stenocactus multicostatus typically reaches 3-5 inches tall and wide as a single globe, though clustering specimens spread wider as they mature.

Q: Can Brain Cactus handle a trip away from home?
A: You can leave it unwatered for up to ten days without harm during your absence.

Q: Is outdoor growing possible in cooler regions?
A: Brain Cactus grows outdoors in USDA zones 9-11. Gardeners in zone 9 with sheltered microclimates can grow it outside with frost protection and rain cover during cold snaps.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
