  •   Philodendron 'Silver Sword', also called Philodendron hastatum, is a climbing aroid from the Araceae family, native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. In its native habitat, it scrambles up tree trunks in warm, humid conditions, and that environment shapes exactly what it needs indoors.

The leaves are sword-shaped with a silvery, metallic sheen that shifts in different light. Young foliage leans toward silver-blue, while mature leaves deepen and elongate into arrow-like blades that can reach considerable length as the plant matures. It grows as a climbing philodendron with aerial roots, and each new leaf emerges larger and more impressive than the last when given support to climb.

Philodendron Hastatum is grown primarily for its metallic foliage rather than its blooms, and reliable flowering information for this species in home cultivation is limited. As it climbs a moss pole or trellis, the plant structure transforms, with each successive node producing larger, more dramatic leaves.

It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor spaces while naturally humidifying the air around it. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact with cats, dogs, and other pets, so place it on a high shelf well out of reach. Rotate it a quarter turn every week or two to ensure balanced growth on all sides, and provide a moss pole to encourage upright climbing and larger foliage development.

  •   Philodendron 'Silver Sword' grows well in bright indirect light and should be kept away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the metallic leaves.

Water it thoroughly every 7-10 days during spring and summer, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, and reduce frequency to every 12-14 days in winter.

Philodendron Hastatum does best in a well-draining aroid mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep roots aerated and prevent rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65-85°F and should never be exposed to frost or prolonged cold below 55°F.

Philodendron Hastatum is a fast-growing climber during warm months and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where temperatures rarely dip below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, Hawaii, coastal California, and parts of Texas, Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Nevada, and coastal Oregon and Washington. In all other states, it thrives as an indoor plant.
  • Q: How often should I water Philodendron 'Silver Sword'?
A: Water every 7-10 days in spring and summer when the top inch of soil feels dry. In winter, scale back to every 12-14 days.

Q: What window placement works best for this plant?
A: Philodendron 'Silver Sword' needs bright indirect light from an east or north-facing window, or several feet back from a west-facing window. Direct afternoon sun will scorch the silvery leaves.

Q: Is Philodendron Hastatum safe around pets and children?
A: No. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf away from cats, dogs, and small children.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Philodendron Hastatum roots easily from stem cuttings. Take a cutting with at least one node and one healthy leaf, then root it in water or moist sphagnum moss in a warm, humid spot. Roots typically appear within 2-4 weeks.

Q: Why are the leaves on Philodendron Hastatum turning yellow?
A: Yellowing leaves often signal overwatering or exposure to cold drafts from air conditioning or heating vents. Check that the soil dries between waterings and move it away from direct airflow to improve air circulation.

Q: Can I grow this plant outdoors?
A: Philodendron Hastatum grows outdoors year-round only in USDA zones 9-11, which includes southern Florida, Hawaii, coastal California, and parts of Texas, Arizona, and the Southeast. Everywhere else, it's best grown indoors.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
