  •   Philodendron Ring of Fire (Philodendron wendlandii hybrid) is a rare variegated philodendron hybrid from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It belongs to the Araceae family and grows in warm, humid conditions beneath dense forest canopies where it climbs and vines through the understory.

It is recognizable by its dramatically serrated, elongated leaves that cycle through shades of green, yellow, orange, and deep red as new growth emerges. Each leaf shifts and intensifies over time with vivid variegation, making every plant genuinely one of a kind. The multicolor foliage is bold and architectural, unlike virtually any other tropical houseplant you can grow indoors. It grows upright and vining, adapting its form based on support and space available.

As a foliage-forward collector plant, it is grown almost entirely for its spectacular leaves rather than its blooms. Like most philodendrons kept as indoor houseplants, it rarely if ever flowers in a home environment.

Philodendron Red Emerald actively filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, functioning as both a decorative and air-purifying houseplant. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach, since cats, dogs, and small children should not handle the plant or ingest its sap, which causes skin and paw irritation on contact. It is sensitive to being moved, so place it in a consistent, settled spot and avoid relocating it frequently. The plant grows well near the natural moisture of a kitchen environment. Rotate it a quarter turn every week or two so all sides receive equal light exposure, and keep it away from air conditioning vents and heater drafts, which stress the plant and slow healthy growth.

  •   Philodendron Ring of Fire grows well in bright indirect light and scorches quickly in direct south-facing window sun.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.

Philodendron Red Emerald does best in a well-draining, airy mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark in roughly equal parts.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 85°F and cannot tolerate frost or freezing temperatures.

Philodendron Red Emerald is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where temperatures stay reliably above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, and sheltered areas of Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina. It may also grow outdoors seasonally in Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, and along the Oregon coast, though most growers across the remaining US states enjoy it best as an indoor tropical houseplant.
  • Q: How often should I water Philodendron Ring of Fire?
A: Water every 7 to 10 days, letting the top inch of soil dry between waterings. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger an inch deep; if dampness remains, delay watering another day or two.

Q: Is it safe for pets and children?
A: Philodendron Ring of Fire should be kept well out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children. The sap can irritate skin and paws, and the plant should not be nibbled or ingested.

Q: What humidity does Philodendron Red Emerald need?
A: High humidity of 60 percent or above keeps the foliage looking its best. Placing it near a kitchen or using a humidifier nearby works well.

Q: How rare is this plant?
A: Philodendron Red Emerald has limited availability and is not commonly found in mainstream garden centers. Its vivid, shifting variegation makes it a sought-after addition to collector plant collections.

Q: Can I move Philodendron Red Emerald outdoors in summer?
A: You can move it outside during warm summer months in a sheltered, shaded spot away from direct sun and rain. Transition it gradually and bring it back indoors well before temperatures drop, since it is sensitive to being moved.

Q: How do I know if it's getting too much light?
A: Philodendron Red Emerald develops brown or bleached patches on leaves when exposed to intense direct sun. Move it back from south-facing windows or filter the light with a sheer curtain.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
