  •   Philodendron Red Congo is a tropical aroid houseplant native to the rainforests of South America, where it grows upright in warm, humid forest understory conditions. A self-heading philodendron that clusters and branches from a central crown rather than climbing or trailing, it grows as a distinctive rare collector plant for indoor spaces.

New leaves unfurl in burgundy-red, gradually deepening to dark olive-green with age. The foliage is broad, leathery, and dramatically oversized, emerging in a tight rosette-like cluster from the plant's central crown. Its upright, clumping growth form fills a room without requiring a trellis or support, creating a wide-spreading presence that develops over time.

Philodendron Red Congo is grown primarily for its foliage rather than its flowers, and bloom details for indoor specimens are limited. It actively filters indoor air toxins including formaldehyde. The natural moisture released through its broad leaves also contributes gentle humidity to surrounding air.

Anchor this plant in a heavy, stable pot as its deep root system and wide spread mature over time. Keep it away from air conditioning or heating vents, as blasts of dry or cold air stress the plant quickly. Rotate it regularly so every side receives even bright indirect light. Cats and dogs should not nibble or eat the plant, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact; a high shelf or spot well out of reach of pets and small children is the safest placement.

  •   Philodendron Red Congo grows well in bright indirect light and scorches easily in south-facing windows with direct afternoon sun.

Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days.

Philodendron Red Congo does best in chunky, well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to support healthy deep roots.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 85°F and must be kept away from frost or cold below 50°F.

Philodendron Red Congo is a moderate grower that benefits from balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where temperatures rarely drop below 20 to 25°F. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Coastal pockets of Oregon, Washington, and parts of New Mexico and Arkansas within zone 9 microclimates may also support it during frost-free months, though it should move indoors before any cold snap arrives.
  • Q: How much light does Philodendron Red Congo need?
A: A spot near an east or north-facing window, or set back from a bright west window, works well. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.

Q: Can you propagate it from cuttings?
A: Philodendron Red Congo is most reliably propagated by dividing offsets or pups from the base of the plant when repotting. Since it is a self-heading plant rather than a vining type, stem cuttings are less effective than division for producing healthy new plants.

Q: Is Philodendron Red Congo toxic to pets?
A: Yes, cats and dogs should not nibble or eat it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact.

Q: How big does it grow indoors?
A: Philodendron Red Congo grows to about 3 to 4 feet in both height and spread over time with consistent warmth, humidity, and monthly feeding during the growing season.

Q: Can Philodendron Red Congo go outside in summer?
A: Move it outdoors during warm months to a sheltered spot with bright indirect light and protection from heavy rain. Bring it back inside before temperatures drop below 55°F.

Q: Is it suitable as a beginner plant?
A: Philodendron Red Congo requires moderate care with attention to light, warmth, and watering schedules. It is not difficult, but it is not as forgiving as some other houseplants.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
