  •   Peperomia 'Ripple Red' (Peperomia caperata), also called the radiator plant, is a compact tropical houseplant in the Piperaceae family. It originates from the rainforest floors of Brazil, where it grows under a dense canopy in warm, humid conditions.

The leaves are deeply corrugated, heart-shaped, and dark burgundy-red with a near-black tone along the ridged grooves. Each leaf has a textured, quilted surface that runs parallel from the center vein outward. Red Ripple Peperomia grows in a tight, low rosette, typically reaching 6 to 8 inches in both height and spread. The stems are reddish and short, keeping the foliage dense and compact.

It produces thin, upright flower spikes — called rat-tail inflorescences — that are white to pale green and rise above the foliage in spring and summer. The blooms are small and unscented. Red Ripple Peperomia also filters indoor air, including formaldehyde and other common household toxins, and this plant is pet friendly, posing no toxicity risk to cats or dogs.

You can place it in a terrarium, where the enclosed humidity suits it well. It also thrives near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the air from drying out too much. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it tolerates the dry heated air that comes with indoor winter conditions. Keep it away from direct airflow from air conditioning or heating vents, and move it away from rain if placed near an open window or door.

  •   Peperomia 'Ripple Red' grows well under office LED lighting and bright indirect light, but scorches in south-facing windows.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Red Ripple Peperomia does best in a well-draining mix of peat or coco coir blended with perlite at a roughly 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and drops below 50°F will cause cold damage.

Red Ripple Peperomia is a slow-growing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and southern Texas. It can also go outside during summer months in zones below 10, as long as it comes back indoors before nighttime temperatures fall below 50°F.
  • Q: How do I propagate Peperomia 'Ripple Red'?
A: Leaf cuttings work well. Cut a healthy leaf with its stem, let the cut end callous for a day, then press it into moist perlite or potting mix. Roots typically form within 3 to 5 weeks.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves on Peperomia 'Ripple Red' most often point to overwatering. Check that the soil is fully dry before the next watering, and make sure the pot has drainage holes so water does not pool at the roots.

Q: Can Red Ripple Peperomia go outside in summer?
A: Yes, move it outside once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 55°F. Keep it in a sheltered spot with indirect light, and bring it back indoors before autumn temperatures drop.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Red Ripple Peperomia is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is listed as safe by the ASPCA.

Q: How do I know when Red Ripple Peperomia needs water?
A: It wilts slightly and the leaves lose a little firmness when the soil has been dry too long. Catching it at that point is fine, but frequent wilting puts unnecessary stress on the plant.

Q: Does this plant really clean the air?
A: Red Ripple Peperomia filters indoor air pollutants including formaldehyde. While no houseplant replaces mechanical ventilation, it does absorb toxins through its foliage and potting medium.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
