  •   Peperomia 'Parallel', also called Parallel Peperomia, is a trailing tropical houseplant in the Piperaceae family, native to the rainforests of South America. It belongs to the species Peperomia puteolata, where it grows as a low-creeping plant along the forest floor under a dense canopy.

The leaves are oval and slightly waxy, with a deep forest green base crossed by pale yellow-green parallel stripes running from stem to tip. Stems are red-pink and wiry, giving the plant a layered, open structure as it trails downward. The striped foliage pattern runs consistently across every leaf, and the contrast between the red stems and striped leaves holds year-round.

Parallel Peperomia produces thin, inconspicuous flower spikes typical of the peperomia family, but it is grown almost entirely for its foliage rather than its blooms. It filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air, and this plant is pet friendly, so it sits safely on shelves, desks, or in a hanging basket within reach of cats and dogs.

Hang Parallel Peperomia in a basket near a kitchen window, where ambient moisture from cooking suits it well. You can move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but keep it covered from rain to prevent waterlogged soil. It wilts slightly when dry, and you can leave it up to ten days without water during a trip. Rotate it every few weeks for even growth across all sides.

  •   Peperomia 'Parallel' grows well under bright indirect light or office LED lighting, away from south-facing windows that cause leaf scorch.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out fully between waterings.

Parallel Peperomia does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil combined with perlite or orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F and stays away from air conditioning vents, heating units, and cold drafts.

Parallel Peperomia is a slow to moderate trailer, and a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly supports steady growth during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 35°F before cold damage sets in. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, and coastal Southern California. It also thrives as an outdoor container plant seasonally across Texas, Arizona, and Georgia during warm months.
  • Q: Is Peperomia 'Parallel' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and can be placed anywhere in the home without concern.

Q: Why are the leaves on my peperomia turning yellow?
A: Peperomia 'Parallel' most often develops yellow leaves from overwatering. Let the soil dry out more fully between waterings and check that the pot drains freely.

Q: Can Parallel Peperomia grow in a terrarium?
A: Yes, it works well in an open terrarium where airflow prevents moisture from building up around the stems and roots.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Parallel Peperomia roots easily from stem cuttings. Snip a stem just below a leaf node, let the cut end dry for a few hours, then place it in moist soil or water.

Q: Does Parallel Peperomia need to be rotated?
A: Yes, rotating it a quarter turn every two to three weeks helps all sides receive even light and keeps the trailing stems from growing lopsided.

Q: What does it look like when this plant needs water?
A: Parallel Peperomia wilts slightly and its stems may soften when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil and water once it feels completely dry.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
