Maranta leuconeura, also called Red Prayer Plant, is a tropical foliage plant in the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of Brazil. It grows low to the ground in its natural habitat, where it spreads beneath the forest canopy in warm, humid conditions.

The leaves are oval and spread flat during the day, with deep green surfaces marked by bold red veins and lighter green feathering along the midrib. The undersides of the leaves are a solid burgundy-red. Maranta leuconeura stays compact and low-growing, typically reaching about 6 to 12 inches tall indoors.

Flower details for this species are not well-documented for indoor specimens, so the foliage is where most of the interest lies. At night, the leaves fold upward along the midrib, a movement driven by light changes called nyctinasty. This folding and unfolding cycle repeats daily and is one of the most consistent traits of Maranta leuconeura.

It grows well near a kitchen or bathroom, where ambient moisture from daily use keeps humidity levels naturally higher. Maranta leuconeura is pet friendly and safe around cats and dogs.
