    •   Anacampseros rufescens Sand Rose, also called Sand Rose, is a compact succulent native to South Africa. It forms tight rosettes of small, fleshy leaves and belongs to the Portulacaceae family, a group known for their drought tolerance and minimal care needs.

The leaves are oval and densely packed in geometric rosette patterns, shifting from green to burgundy-red when exposed to direct sun. Growth remains low and spreading, with offsets clustering around the base to form decorative mat-like colonies. The foliage has a powdery or waxy texture that catches light subtly without glossiness.

In late summer through fall, it produces cone-shaped flowers in soft lavender to pink shades that rise above the rosette on thin stems. Blooms appear intermittently rather than all at once, extending the flowering window over several weeks. The plant needs a temperature drop at night to initiate blooming, a trait tied to its natural mountain habitat.

Anacampseros rufescens grows well in terrariums and shallow containers, where its compact form and modest root system suit confined spaces. Move it outside in summer, and it can remain outdoors through frost in autumn and into winter in cooler zones. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It tolerates dry heated air indoors year-round. Propagation is straightforward via leaf cuttings or offsets pulled gently from the base and allowed to dry before pressing into soil.

    •   Anacampseros rufescens Sand Rose grows well in direct sun and tolerates low-light conditions indoors, though peak color appears in bright light.

Water it every 10–14 days during spring and summer when the soil is completely dry; reduce to once monthly in fall and winter.

Anacampseros rufescens does best in gritty cactus or succulent mix amended with perlite or coarse sand for fast drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50–70°F and is frost-tolerant, surviving extended freezes below 20°F when soil remains dry.

Anacampseros rufescens is a slow to moderate grower requiring diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3–8, withstanding winter temperatures as low as −20°F when protected from excess moisture. It grows outdoors in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, upstate New York, parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, California, and parts of Arizona and New Mexico.

    • Q: How often should I water Anacampseros rufescens Sand Rose?
A: During spring and summer, water every 10–14 days when the soil is completely dry. In fall and winter, reduce to once monthly or less.

Q: Will it grow in low light?
A: Anacampseros rufescens Sand Rose tolerates low-light indoor conditions, though the leaves remain greener and less colorful than in bright light.

Q: Can Anacampseros rufescens survive a trip away from home?
A: It remains firm and hydrated for up to ten days after thorough watering and extends even longer without water during cool months when growth slows.

Q: Does it need special soil?
A: Anacampseros rufescens needs fast-draining gritty mix; standard potting soil holds too much moisture and causes root rot in this species.

Q: What zones allow Sand Rose to stay outdoors year-round?
A: Zones 3–8 support winter hardiness, including Minnesota and Wisconsin through parts of the Southwest; in zone 9 and above, bring it indoors in fall.

Q: How do I propagate Sand Rose?
A: Remove healthy leaf or offset cuttings, let them air-dry for 2–3 days, then press gently into dry succulent soil and water lightly after one week.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
