    •   Agave kerchovei 'Huajuapan Red' is a compact succulent native to Mexico with a tight rosette of fleshy leaves that shift from green to burgundy-red in bright light. This drought-tolerant agave rarely exceeds 12 inches across, making it a sculptural addition to indoor collections and outdoor gardens in warm climates.

The leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, arranged in a dense rosette with edges that curve slightly inward. In low light, the foliage stays green, but direct sun intensifies the burgundy-red tones throughout the plant over several weeks. This color shift happens gradually as light exposure increases.

Mature plants produce tall flower spikes with pale yellow blooms in late spring to early summer, though flowering is infrequent on younger specimens. After the main rosette blooms, it dies back naturally, but offsets typically develop around the base to continue the plant's life cycle.

Move it outside for autumn and into mild winters with protection from rain. It tolerates dry, heated indoor air and can move outside for summer warmth without stress. Propagate it from offsets that form around the base rosette, potting them into dry succulent soil where roots establish in 2-3 weeks. Keep it on a high shelf or away from small children and pets, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation.

    •   Agave kerchovei 'Huajuapan Red' grows well in bright indirect light and direct sun, with foliage deepening to burgundy-red tones in full sunlight.

Water it thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry between waterings, roughly every 2-3 weeks during the growing season; reduce to monthly or less in fall and winter.

'Huajuapan Red' does best in well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix, never in standard potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 80°F and tolerates frost down to 20°F for brief periods with protection.

'Huajuapan Red' is a slow-growing succulent that rarely needs pruning; feed sparingly with diluted succulent fertilizer in spring only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11, surviving outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, southern Texas, and Florida. In colder zones, bring it indoors before the first hard freeze or grow it in containers that move seasonally.

    • Q: How often should I water Agave kerchovei 'Huajuapan Red'?
A: The soil must dry completely between waterings. In spring and summer, this occurs roughly every 2-3 weeks; in fall and winter, extend intervals to monthly or longer as growth slows.

Q: Will it turn red indoors under regular household light?
A: Agave kerchovei 'Huajuapan Red' stays green in low light and requires direct sun exposure to develop burgundy-red tones in the foliage.

Q: Is 'Huajuapan Red' safe around cats and dogs?
A: Keep it out of reach of pets. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the pointed leaves pose a physical hazard.

Q: How fast does this plant grow?
A: 'Huajuapan Red' is a slow grower; expect minimal change in size from season to season.

Q: Can 'Huajuapan Red' survive frost outdoors?
A: It tolerates brief freezes down to 20°F with protection, though sustained freezing will damage it. Cover the soil and base during cold snaps in marginal zones.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: Remove offsets that form around the base rosette and pot them into dry succulent soil without initial watering. Roots establish in 2-3 weeks.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
