  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Jakupica' is a rare frost hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to rocky alpine slopes across the Balkans and southeastern Europe. It grows naturally in harsh, well-drained mountain terrain where winters are brutal and summers are short, making it one of the toughest cold hardy alpine plants you can grow.

Jakupica forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves in purple and green tones that shift with the seasons and light intensity. The rosettes cluster together over time, creating a dense, low-growing mat ideal for containers, rock gardens, and alpine troughs. Leaf edges may show subtle tipping or color contrast depending on sun exposure and temperature.

Like all hens and chicks succulents, it needs a period of cooler night temperatures to trigger blooming. Each individual rosette is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once and then dies back, but the surrounding offsets quickly fill the gap and continue the colony.

It handles balcony wind and rain well, and tolerates dry heated indoor air without issue. Move it outside in summer to soak up full sun, but provide some cover from prolonged heavy rainfall to prevent root rot. Jakupica is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs, and is rare in mainstream horticulture.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Jakupica' grows well in full sun to partial sun and may scorch in intense south-facing windows indoors.

Water it every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Jakupica does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil combined with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles a wide temperature range from 25°F up to 85°F with excellent frost hardiness.

Jakupica grows at a slow to moderate pace and needs little to no fertilizer, perhaps one light feed in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4-9, tolerating frost down to around -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, and Rhode Island. It also grows in warmer states such as California, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, particularly in cooler inland or elevated regions.

A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when the soil is dry enough to water again?

Q: How rare is this plant?
A: Jakupica is a rare collector succulent with purple and green rosettes and cold hardy nature, especially valued among alpine plant enthusiasts and not commonly found in mainstream garden centers.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
