  •   Echeveria 'New Black' is a rare dark rosette succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico and Central America. It has earned devoted followers among collectors and houseplant enthusiasts for its near-black foliage and forgiving nature.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes packed with thick, fleshy leaves in deep burgundy-purple to near-black hues. Each leaf has a slightly waxy, smooth texture with gently pointed tips that give the rosette a sculptural, jewel-like appearance. Over time, it clusters beautifully, producing offsets that fill a pot with layers of dark rosettes that stand out against bright containers or pale gravel.

To encourage blooming, 'New Black' benefits from a natural night temperature drop, which signals the plant to shift into a flowering cycle. Rotating it regularly ensures every side of the rosette develops evenly and maintains that symmetrical form.

Move it outside for summer and it can linger into autumn in mild climates, though keep it sheltered from rain since sitting water causes rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It tolerates the dry heated air found in most homes and is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Echeveria 'New Black' grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, needing at least 4-6 hours of good light daily.

Water it thoroughly every 10-14 days in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter, always letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

'New Black' does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with 30-50% perlite or coarse grit to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60-80°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F.

'New Black' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light, balanced succulent fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and is not frost hardy, needing protection once temperatures approach freezing below 32°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also grows along the mild coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington, as well as in southern portions of New Mexico and the warmest pockets of Arkansas and North Carolina.
  • Q: How often should I water Echeveria 'New Black'?
A: Every 10-14 days in spring and summer, cutting back to every 3-4 weeks in fall and winter. Always let the soil dry out fully before watering again.

Q: Is this succulent safe around cats and dogs?
A: Echeveria 'New Black' is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does 'New Black' need?
A: Intense south-facing window exposure in summer can cause leaf scorching, so a little afternoon shade is helpful in those situations. Bright indirect light to full sun works well otherwise.

Q: Is there a best way to propagate it?
A: 'New Black' is most easily propagated by gently removing the offsets it produces as it clusters. Allow the offset's base to callous for a day or two before setting it in dry succulent mix, then begin light watering after a week.

Q: How rare is 'New Black'?
A: 'New Black' is not widely available in standard garden centers.

Q: Can it survive being left alone during travel?
A: You can leave it unwatered for up to ten days.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
