  •   Variegated Shark Fin Snake Plant - Sansevieria, also called the whale fin snake plant, is a rare paddle leaf sansevieria native to the Congo region of Central Africa. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and grows naturally on the forest floor in low-light, dry conditions. This slow growing succulent has become one of the most sought-after indoor plants for collectors drawn to its unusually large, paddle-shaped foliage.

Each leaf is a single broad, upright paddle that can reach two to three feet tall and nearly a foot wide indoors. The surface is mottled in mid-green and silver-green, with irregular horizontal banding and creamy yellow to white margins running along both edges. The variegation on each leaf is unique, so no two leaves look exactly alike. The texture is firm and waxy, and the leaf stands fully upright without support.

Sansevieria masoniana variegata rarely blooms indoors, but when given a drop in nighttime temperature, it may produce a tall flower spike with small, tubular, pale green-white flowers. Variegated Shark Fin also earns its place indoors as an air purifying plant, filtering formaldehyde and other toxins from the surrounding air. It releases oxygen at night, unlike most houseplants that do so only during daylight hours.

Place it on a high shelf or a surface well out of reach, as cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed away from small children as well. You can move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but cover it from rain and bring it back in before temperatures drop. Because dracaena masoniana variegata stores water in its thick leaf, you can leave it up to ten days without water. Its deep root system benefits from a heavy pot to prevent tipping, and keeping it near kitchen moisture can support steady growth without any added humidity effort.

  •   Variegated Shark Fin Snake Plant - Sansevieria grows well in bright indirect light and adapts to medium or low light, including office LED setups.

It needs water every 10 to 14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Variegated Shark Fin does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix combined with perlite to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and tolerates dry heated indoor air, but keep it away from AC or heater vents.

Variegated Shark Fin is a slow growing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month in spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also spend summers outdoors in zone 8 states like Oregon and North Carolina, moving back inside before the first frost.
  • Q: How much light does Variegated Shark Fin Snake Plant - Sansevieria need?
A: A north- or east-facing window works well, keeping it a few feet back from the glass. South-facing windows can scorch the leaf edges if it sits too close.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering it?
A: Variegated Shark Fin Snake Plant - Sansevieria will show soft, mushy leaf bases and yellowing at the leaf edges when it has received too much water. The thick paddle stores water for extended periods, so erring toward underwatering is safer than overwatering.

Q: Is Variegated Shark Fin safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also cause skin or paw irritation on contact, so keep it out of their reach.

Q: How large does this plant get indoors?
A: Variegated Shark Fin typically produces one to two leaves per year indoors, with mature leaves reaching two to three feet tall and up to ten inches wide. Growth slows further in lower light conditions.

Q: Can Variegated Shark Fin survive while I travel?
A: Water it thoroughly before you leave, and it will hold comfortably for up to ten days without any additional watering.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Variegated Shark Fin propagates most reliably through rhizome division at repotting time. Leaf cuttings can root in water or soil, but any cutting taken from a variegated leaf will likely produce an all-green offset rather than a variegated one.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
