Snake Plant Sansevieria Zeylanica, also called Bowstring Hemp, is a tough evergreen indoor plant native to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It grows naturally in dry, rocky environments and has been cultivated for centuries, with its strong leaf fibers historically used to make bowstrings and rope.

The leaves are long, sword-shaped, and grow in an upright cluster from the base, reaching up to 2.5 feet in height indoors. Each leaf is dark green with irregular, wavy horizontal bands of lighter silver-green running across the surface. The edges taper to a firm point, and the leaf surface has a slightly leathery, smooth texture.

Bowstring Hemp rarely flowers indoors, but when it does, it produces thin stalks with small, tubular, pale white to cream flowers that carry a faint sweet fragrance, usually in late spring or early summer. A drop in nighttime temperature tends to encourage blooming. It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor air and releases oxygen at night rather than during the day.

Place it on a high shelf or a surface out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children, as the plant should not be ingested. Bowstring Hemp survives up to ten days without water, and you can move it outside for summer or leave it on a balcony into autumn. Rotate the pot periodically so each side receives even light exposure. The plant has deep roots and does better in a heavy pot that won't tip.
