Maranta leuconeura, also called Green Prayer Plant, is a tropical perennial in the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of Brazil. It grows naturally on the forest floor, where the canopy filters light and the air stays warm and humid year-round.

The leaves are oval and pale to mid-green, marked along the midrib with darker green blotches and feathered lateral markings that spread toward the edges. The undersides carry a faint burgundy-red tone, and the surface has a slightly textured, satin-like finish. Stems trail as the plant matures, and a hanging basket keeps the trailing growth fully extended.

Maranta leuconeura produces small, white to pale lilac flowers on thin upright spikes, typically in spring or summer, though blooms appear infrequently indoors. The flowers carry no notable fragrance. It is pet friendly, and it also filters indoor air, removing formaldehyde and other airborne toxins.

Rotate it every week or two so each side receives even light exposure. The leaves fold upward at night and flatten again by morning, a movement caused by changes in light. High humidity suits it well, and it grows successfully in a terrarium, near a kitchen sink, or grouped with other plants to raise ambient moisture. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as dry moving air causes the leaf edges to curl and brown.

You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
