  •   Hoya 'Black Margin' (Hoya sp.) is a rare trailing wax plant from the family Apocynaceae, native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. It stands out for its bold dark-edged foliage and straightforward care indoors.

It produces thick, waxy leaves in deep forest green, each bordered by a bold near-black edge. The leaves have a smooth, succulent-like texture and grow along cascading vines, creating a natural choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where the stems trail downward. The contrast between the leaf centers and dark margins remains vivid year-round.

When mature and well-cared for, Hoya Black Margin produces small, star-shaped waxy clusters typical of the hoya genus, though flowering indoors depends on good light, a slight nighttime temperature drop, and allowing the plant to remain undisturbed. The blooms have a gentle fragrance. The foliage delivers high-contrast visual appeal in any light condition.

Rotate it every few weeks for even, balanced growth and keep it away from direct AC or heating vents. It is pet-friendly, so curious cats and dogs can safely share the space without risk. The plant also purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins. It grows well in a macrame hanger, on a high shelf, or near a bright kitchen window where ambient moisture provides a boost.

  •   Hoya 'Black Margin' grows well in bright indirect light, positioned near an east or west-facing window away from harsh direct rays.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Hoya Black Margin does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and standard potting soil to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and must be protected from frost.

Hoya Black Margin is a moderately slow grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, coastal and southern California, Hawaii, southern Texas, southern Arizona, and parts of Louisiana and coastal Georgia and South Carolina. In cooler regions, it makes a wonderful summer patio plant that moves back indoors before the first frost.
  • Q: How often should I water Hoya 'Black Margin'?
A: Let the top inch of soil dry completely between waterings. Check soil with your finger before watering to avoid overwatering.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Hoya 'Black Margin' is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for households with curious animals.

Q: Can Hoya Black Margin be propagated?
A: Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one leaf, then root it in water or moist sphagnum moss in a warm, humid spot. Roots typically appear within three to six weeks.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: Hoya Black Margin develops yellow leaves most often from overwatering, poor drainage, or cold drafts from AC or heating vents. Let the soil dry out more between waterings and move it away from direct airflow.

Q: Does Hoya Black Margin grow quickly?
A: It grows at a moderate, slow pace indoors. Consistent bright indirect light and monthly feeding during the active season will encourage steady progress.

Q: Can this plant survive outdoors in winter?
A: Hoya Black Margin needs frost protection and cannot survive outdoors year-round in most of the United States. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered, filtered-light spot, then bring it back indoors once nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
