    •   Giant Bird of Paradise, also called Giant Bird Of Paradise, is a tropical flowering houseplant native to South Africa. Strelitzia nicolai produces white and blue flowers and banana-like foliage that can reach several feet tall.

The leaves are large, elongated, and blue-green, resembling banana plant foliage, and can grow up to 18 inches long on a plant that spreads wide or grows narrow depending on variety and light. Strelitzia nicolai has a sturdy upright habit with a thick central stem and deep root system that requires a heavy pot for stability. The plant is sensitive to being moved, so choose its location carefully once established.

The flowers have white sepals and blue or orange petals arranged in a pointed, bird-like form that blooms in winter and spring. Strelitzia nicolai requires a temperature drop of at least 10°F between day and night to flower, making consistent warmth without cool nights a challenge for indoor bloom. The plant also produces pollen and allergens, so keep it away from those with sensitivities.

Rotate Strelitzia nicolai regularly for even growth on all sides, and keep it away from direct air from AC or heater vents, which cause stress and leaf damage. Move it outside for summer months or leave it outdoors in autumn if temperatures stay above 50°F. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, so wash your hands after handling and keep it on a high shelf out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children. Strelitzia nicolai purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins while naturally humidifying the air around it.

    •   Giant Bird of Paradise grows well in bright indirect light and can tolerate direct sun with afternoon shade; rotate regularly for even growth.

Water it when the soil surface is dry. During active growth in spring and summer the soil dries faster than in winter, when growth naturally slows.

Strelitzia nicolai does best in well-draining potting soil amended with peat moss or coconut coir to retain some moisture without waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 75°F and is sensitive to direct air from AC or heater vents, which cause leaf damage.

Strelitzia nicolai is a moderate to slow grower that benefits from a specialized balanced fertilizer applied every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 and 12 and does not tolerate frost below 50°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and southern California.

    • Q: How often should I water Giant Bird of Paradise?
A: The soil surface texture is the best guide; water when it is dry. During active growth in spring and summer the soil dries faster than in winter, when growth naturally slows and watering intervals extend.

Q: Does it need high humidity?
A: Giant Bird of Paradise needs high humidity and benefits from misting or placement near a humidifier, especially in dry indoor environments.

Q: Can Strelitzia nicolai survive being moved frequently?
A: No. It is sensitive to being moved and may drop leaves or slow growth after relocation, so choose a permanent bright location once you bring it home.

Q: What kind of pot should I use?
A: Strelitzia nicolai has deep roots and requires a heavy pot for stability; terracotta or ceramic pots work well to prevent tipping.

Q: Is Giant Bird Of Paradise safe for pets?
A: No. The foliage is mildly toxic and the sap causes skin and paw irritation, so wash your hands after handling and keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.

      Q: Will it bloom indoors?
A: Giant Bird Of Paradise can bloom indoors if given a consistent 10°F temperature drop between day and night, which is difficult to achieve in most heated homes. Winter months provide the best chance for flowering.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
