  •   Sempervivum 'Twilight Blues' is a cold-hardy, drought-tolerant succulent in the Crassulaceae family, also called hens and chicks. Native to the mountain regions of Europe and Asia Minor, it evolved in rocky, exposed terrain where it withstood harsh conditions as standard. It is one of the toughest succulents you can grow.

Twilight Blues forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in a blend of blue-green and dusky purple tones that shift with the seasons and light levels. The fleshy, pointed leaves are edged with fine cilia and arranged in a classic geometric spiral. As a clustering succulent, it steadily produces offsets around the mother rosette, creating a dense, spreading mat over time.

Like all sempervivums, each mature rosette blooms once, typically sending up a tall flower stalk in summer with starry pink to reddish blooms. It needs a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger blooming, so keeping it in a naturally cool spot is beneficial. After flowering, the mother rosette dies back, but the surrounding offsets fill the space and continue growing.

Move it outside in summer to develop its best color, and it handles balcony wind and rain without trouble. Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches across, spreading wider as offsets cluster around the mother plant. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant is pet-safe around cats and dogs, and it tolerates dry heated indoor air. Propagate it by gently twisting off a healthy offset and replanting it in well-draining soil.

  •   Sempervivum 'Twilight Blues' grows well in partial sun to full sun, with at least four to six hours of direct sun daily for best color.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days.

Twilight Blues does best in fast-draining soil such as a cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse grit.

It tolerates temperatures from well below freezing down to around minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit when dormant and established in the ground.

Twilight Blues is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, perhaps one light feeding in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Alaska's milder zones. It also performs well across Arkansas, Oklahoma, Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of Alabama, Nevada, and New Mexico that fall within these zones.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Twilight Blues' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What's the most common mistake when caring for this plant?
A: Overwatering is the biggest issue. Sempervivum 'Twilight Blues' needs soil to dry completely between waterings, and wet conditions cause root rot.

Q: Can Twilight Blues survive a trip without a caretaker?
A: It can go without water for up to ten days.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Twilight Blues offsets root quickly. Gently twist off a healthy offset from the mother rosette and replant it in well-draining soil.

Q: Does Twilight Blues need fertilizer?
A: It is a slow grower and needs little to no fertilizer. One light feeding in spring is optional.

Q: What window placement brings out the best color in this frost hardy succulent?
A: Place it in a spot with four to six hours of direct sun daily. Full sun intensifies the blue-green and purple tones.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
