  •   Sempervivum Purdy's is a hardy houseleek succulent in the Crassulaceae family, originating from the mountainous regions of Europe where it grows naturally in rocky, well-draining soils. It has exceptional cold tolerance and drought resistance, growing in conditions where many other plants struggle.

Purdy forms compact rosettes with thick, fleshy leaves that shift color throughout the seasons. The rosettes have green centers with reddish-purple tips that deepen in cooler weather and bright sunlight, with each one reaching 3-4 inches across at maturity. It steadily produces offsets that cluster together, creating spreading colonies over time and making it an excellent choice for ground cover in rock gardens and containers.

During summer months, Purdy sends up tall flowering stalks topped with star-shaped blooms, though the parent rosette dies after flowering while leaving behind numerous offsets to carry on the colony. The plant handles balcony wind and rain exceptionally well and can remain outdoors through autumn months.

Purdy grows slowly as ground cover in rock gardens, containers, and alpine settings where its clustering habit creates natural spreading colonies. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It is pet-friendly and safe around cats and dogs, with no toxicity concerns for household pets.

  •   Sempervivum Purdy's grows well in partial sun to full sun but needs rotating for even growth when grown indoors.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Purdy does best in well-draining soil mix with sand, perlite, and standard potting soil for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50-80°F but handles frost exceptionally well, tolerating temperatures down to -20°F.

Purdy grows slowly and rarely needs fertilizer, producing offsets naturally throughout the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-9 and tolerates frost down to -20°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. It also grows outdoors in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon, as well as Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum Purdy's?
A: In winter, reduce frequency significantly or stop watering entirely if it's dormant outdoors. Indoors during the growing season, monitor the soil moisture by checking it regularly rather than following a fixed schedule.

Q: Is it safe for homes with cats and dogs?
A: Sempervivum Purdy's is non-toxic and poses no safety concerns for cats, dogs, or other household pets.

Q: Can Purdy survive outdoors in winter?
A: It survives temperatures down to -20°F throughout most of the continental United States and can remain planted outdoors year-round in zones 3-9.

Q: What type of light does this plant need?
A: Purdy can scorch under intense direct afternoon sun indoors, so rotate it regularly for even growth and place it in a spot with bright light but afternoon shade if growing on a south-facing windowsill.

Q: How fast does Purdy spread?
A: It produces offsets steadily over multiple seasons, with new rosettes clustering together to expand coverage gradually.

Q: What size do individual rosettes reach?
A: Each rosette reaches 3-4 inches across at maturity, and Purdy's spreading habit allows colonies to eventually cover several square feet as offsets cluster together.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
