  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Purple Haze' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe where it evolved among rocky alpine terrain. This drought tolerant plant once carried the name Jovibarba heuffelii 'Purple Haze' and belongs to the hens and chicks group, growing in the unforgiving, well-drained conditions of high-altitude slopes.

'Purple Haze' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with thick, pointed leaves that flush purple and smoky violet, deepening with sun exposure and cooler temperatures. The clustering growth habit develops as each mother rosette gradually produces offsets that split from the center rather than spreading via runners, building a dense, jewel-toned mat over time. Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches across.

It needs a natural drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger its blooming cycle, positioning outdoor growth through autumn and into cooler seasons best for flowering. Bell-shaped blooms rise on tall stalks from mature rosettes. During bloom, it may produce pollen, so those with seasonal allergies should consider placement in open spaces rather than confined areas.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. It handles balcony wind and dry indoor air without trouble, and move it outside in summer without transition stress. A simple overhang or porch provides the cover it needs during prolonged wet winters to prevent root rot. It is non-toxic and safe for homes with cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Purple Haze' needs full sun to partial sun, with four to six hours of direct daily light for the deepest purple color development.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors.

'Purple Haze' does best in fast-draining soil, a gritty mix of 50 percent coarse perlite or pumice blended with cactus and succulent potting mix.

It tolerates a wide temperature range from around 25°F up to 90°F, with exceptional frost hardiness across northern regions.

'Purple Haze' grows at a moderate pace and rarely needs fertilizer, though a light, diluted succulent feed once in spring gives it a seasonal boost.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8, tolerating winter lows down to around negative 30°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. In warmer zones like California, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Florida, it can thrive as a seasonal outdoor plant or with afternoon shade to protect it from intense summer heat.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Purple Haze' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction produces the deepest purple color?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Purple Haze' grows best in south or west-facing windows, though the deepest color develops with consistent exposure rather than window direction alone; consistent strong light matters more than direction.

Q: How big does 'Purple Haze' get?
A: Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches across, with the plant slowly spreading into a wider clustering mat as offsets form and mature.

Q: Can it survive a long trip without a caretaker?
A: 'Purple Haze' stores water in its leaves, allowing it to go extended periods between waterings.

Q: How does 'Purple Haze' propagate?
A: It splits offsets that form at the center of the mother rosette. Gently separate them and replant into well-draining soil.

Q: Is year-round outdoor growing possible?
A: 'Purple Haze' grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 4 through 8, tolerating frost down to negative 30°F in the coldest areas.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
