  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Kapo' is a rare cold-hardy succulent belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe, it grows in rocky, exposed terrain where winters are harsh and water is scarce. It is one of the toughest succulents available for outdoor gardens.

Kapo forms tight, compact rosettes with fleshy, pointed-tip leaves that shift between green and red tones depending on light and season. The leaves are layered in a sculptural, geometric pattern that stays dense and orderly even as the plant clusters. As a clustering succulent, it gradually produces offsets around the mother plant, creating a carpet of rosettes over time.

Kapo channels its energy into producing those tightly packed rosettes and multiplying offsets rather than dramatic floral displays. The plant earns its place in a collection through structure, texture, and exceptional hardiness rather than seasonal blooms. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Move it outside in summer and it handles balcony wind and rain without trouble. Kapo survives temperatures as low as -40°F in well-draining soil and can remain outdoors well into autumn. It is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, so it fits safely into households with animals.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Kapo' grows in partial sun to full sun, needing at least 4-6 hours of direct light daily for best color.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Kapo does best in fast-draining gritty soil, such as cactus mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F during the growing season and tolerates extreme cold down to -40°F.

Kapo is a slow to moderate grower requiring minimal fertilizing, at most a diluted feed once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3-8. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Utah.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Kapo' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction works best for light?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Kapo' grows best in a south or west-facing window where it receives direct afternoon sun. Rotate it regularly to encourage even, symmetrical rosette growth.

    Q: How does Kapo propagate?
A: It propagates naturally by producing offsets, or chicks, around the base of the mother rosette. Simply separate a healthy offset and replant it in fresh, gritty soil.

Q: Can it grow on a balcony?
A: Kapo handles balcony wind and rain beautifully and can live outdoors through summer and into autumn. Ensure it has good drainage and some cover during prolonged heavy rain to prevent root rot.

Q: How fast does Kapo grow?
A: It is a slow to moderate grower, gradually spreading through offsets rather than expanding rapidly in size.

Q: What happens if it gets too much water?
A: Overwatering causes root rot in this drought-tolerant succulent. The rosette bases soften and the plant declines if soil stays wet for extended periods.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
