    •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Chocolate Sundae' is a rare alpine succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky mountain regions of southeastern Europe. Unlike typical hens and chicks, it forms tight, self-contained rosettes rather than spreading via offsets, making it a valued addition for collectors and beginners alike. The species grows naturally in well-drained alpine terrain and brings that same mountain hardiness to gardens and containers.

        Chocolate Sundae grows in upright rosettes packed with thick leaves that shift from forest green to deep chocolate-brown tones, creating the layered sundae effect its name describes. The leaf edges have a crisp, defined structure, and rosettes cluster outward over time into a dense, low-growing mound. The leaves shift in tone with light levels and seasons.

        It produces star-shaped pale yellow to creamy white flowers in summer on short upright stalks from mature rosettes. Unlike many hens and chicks, the parent rosette does not always die after flowering, allowing the plant to continue growing and flowering year after year. The blooms add seasonal interest to rock gardens and container arrangements.

        Move it outside in summer, and it handles balcony wind and rain with confidence, staying outdoors well into autumn thanks to its frost tolerance down to 10°F.
