  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Cherry Glow' is a rare cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky alpine meadows and mountain slopes of southeastern Europe. Unlike common hens and chicks, this species belongs to the Jovibarba group and is sought after by collectors for its exceptional frost hardiness and vivid leaf color.

'Cherry Glow' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes of fleshy pointed leaves that flush in shades of cherry red and burgundy, deepening in bright light and cooler temperatures. The leaves have finely fringed edges. Over time, it clusters offsets around the mother rosette, creating a low-growing mat of bold color in gardens and containers.

During summer, 'Cherry Glow' produces star-shaped pale yellow flowers on tall, upright stalks. Each rosette blooms once in its lifetime, then dies back naturally while surrounding offsets continue the plant forward.

'Cherry Glow' excels in rock gardens, alpine troughs, balcony pots, and container arrangements where it handles wind and rain with ease. It grows well outdoors through autumn and winter and tolerates dry heated indoor air, so it adapts to both garden beds and windowsill collections. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Cherry Glow' grows well in partial to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

'Cherry Glow' performs best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse pumice.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F up to 85°F and is impressively frost tolerant for a succulent.

'Cherry Glow' is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, at most a light, diluted feed once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to around 30°F at the lower end. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Cherry Glow' safe for homes with pets?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: How does the plant spread in its container or garden space?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Cherry Glow' propagates naturally by producing offsets (chicks) that cluster around the mother rosette and can be gently separated and replanted.

Q: Does 'Cherry Glow' change color in different seasons?
A: Leaf color deepens and intensifies in bright light and cooler temperatures, so autumn and winter typically bring out richer cherry-red and burgundy tones.

Q: What happens if I water too frequently?
A: 'Cherry Glow' is drought tolerant and overwatering causes root rot, so the soil must dry completely between waterings.

Q: Can 'Cherry Glow' tolerate indoor conditions year-round?
A: It handles dry heated indoor air well, though it grows better outdoors in autumn and winter where it gets natural cold exposure.

Q: How large does the plant grow?
A: 'Cherry Glow' forms tight rosettes that cluster gradually over time into a low-growing mat, reaching two to four inches tall and spreading eight to twelve inches wide.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
