  •   Begonia 'Black Magic', also called Black Magic Begonia, is a cane-type begonia in the family Begoniaceae, bred from tropical species native to Central and South America. It belongs to the angel wing begonia group, known for its upright cane-like stems and large, dramatically dark foliage.

The leaves of 'Black Magic' are long and asymmetrical with a subtle wing-like shape, deep burgundy-black on top and a contrasting deep red on the undersides. The surface has a faint metallic sheen and may show small silver spotting depending on light conditions. It grows in an upright, cane-like form that fits well into a bohemian or architectural interior arrangement.

'Black Magic' produces clusters of small coral-pink to soft red flowers that appear on arching stems above the foliage, typically in spring and summer. Between bloom cycles, it holds its dark foliage year-round as the main visual feature. The plant can grow under office LED lighting, where it maintains its leaf color well without natural window light.

Place it near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher, since it needs consistent humidity to stay at its best. It is sensitive to being moved, so pick a spot and let it settle. In summer, move it outside to a sheltered spot, but keep it covered from rain to protect the leaves and roots. 'Black Magic' is a collector plant with dark foliage that is harder to find than common begonia varieties, and it sits well on a high shelf where pets and toddlers cannot reach it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant should not be ingested by cats or dogs.

  •   Begonia 'Black Magic' grows well in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves.

Water it every 7-10 days, letting the top inch of soil dry out between waterings, and reduce frequency in winter.

'Black Magic' does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix with perlite added to prevent waterlogging at the roots.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

'Black Magic' is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F through winter. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and coastal Southern California. It performs as an outdoor seasonal plant in Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and the Carolinas during the warmer months.
  • Q: Is Begonia 'Black Magic' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble on it. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and ingesting any part of the plant is harmful to pets.

Q: How do I know when it needs more water?
A: Begonia 'Black Magic' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than going by a fixed schedule alone.

Q: Can 'Black Magic' grow in an office without natural light?
A: It can sustain leaf color under full-spectrum or bright LED office lighting, as long as the fixture is close enough to provide adequate intensity.

Q: Why are the leaves of my plant turning pale or scorched at the edges?
A: Pale or scorched patches on the leaves usually mean 'Black Magic' is getting too much direct sun. Move it back from the window or shift it to a north- or east-facing exposure.

Q: Can Black Magic Begonia be moved outside for summer?
A: Yes, move it to a shaded outdoor spot once temperatures stay reliably above 60°F. Keep it sheltered from rain, which can waterlog the soil and damage the leaves.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Black Magic Begonia propagates well from stem cuttings. Take a cutting just below a node, let the cut end dry for an hour, then place it in moist soil or water until roots form.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
