  •   Kalanchoe tomentosa, also called Panda Plant, is a succulent native to the highlands of Madagascar, where it grows in rocky, semi-arid terrain with excellent drainage and abundant sunlight. Part of the Kalanchoe genus in the Crassulaceae family, this drought-tolerant succulent has earned a following among plant collectors and indoor gardeners alike.

The leaves are thick and velvety, coated in soft silver-white hairs and tipped with rust-brown or chocolate-brown spots along the edges. The fuzzy texture gives the plant an almost touchable quality, and the upright rosette form creates a tidy, sculptural appearance on any shelf or windowsill. Oval to elongated leaves sit on sturdy, branching stems that add presence whether displayed solo or grouped with other succulents.

Mature plants can produce small tubular flowers when exposed to a noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures, though blooms are not guaranteed indoors and occur infrequently. Most growers celebrate this plant for its year-round foliage rather than expecting regular flowering.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside for the summer in warmer climates, though it needs protection from rain to prevent spotting on the fuzzy leaves. Keep it on a high shelf away from cats and dogs, and away from small children as well, since it is toxic if ingested. It tolerates dry heated air readily and holds its shape well in offices and living rooms year-round, though rotating it occasionally ensures even, upright growth on all sides.

  •   Panda Plant - Kalanchoe tomentosa grows in bright indirect light to partial or direct sun, but it can scorch in intense south-facing windows during peak summer.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer and reduce to once a month in winter, always letting the soil dry completely between waterings.

Kalanchoe tomentosa does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for optimal drainage and root health.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F.

Kalanchoe tomentosa is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light balanced fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where winter temperatures stay reliably above 20-25°F. It grows outdoors in California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada for much of the year. Coastal areas of Oregon and Washington in zone 9 can also support it outdoors with light protection during the coldest nights of winter.
  • Q: How often should I water Panda Plant - Kalanchoe tomentosa?
A: Every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, cutting back to once a month in fall and winter. Let the soil dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.

Q: Is it safe for cats and dogs?
A: Panda Plant - Kalanchoe tomentosa is toxic if ingested, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children.

Q: What window placement works best for Kalanchoe tomentosa?
A: East or west-facing windows provide bright indirect light without the intense afternoon heat that can scorch the fuzzy leaves. North-facing windows work only if very bright.

Q: How big does it grow indoors?
A: Kalanchoe tomentosa typically reaches 12-18 inches tall over several years, growing slowly in an upright, branching form. Rotating the pot regularly helps it develop evenly rather than leaning toward the light.

Q: Can I propagate Panda Plant?
A: Both leaf and stem cuttings root readily in a well-draining succulent mix during the warmer months. Allow cut ends to callous for a day or two before planting for best results.

Q: Does it grow well under office lighting?
A: Panda Plant can adapt to bright LED office lights as long as the fixture is close enough to provide consistent intensity. Growth will be slower than in a sunny window, but the plant will hold its shape well.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
