  •   Kalanchoe orgyalis Copper Spoons is a drought-tolerant succulent native to the rocky, arid regions of Madagascar. This member of the Crassulaceae family adapted to survive extended dry seasons with minimal water, earning appeal among collectors worldwide for its architectural form and texture.

The leaves are the standout feature: rounded spoons coated in dense, velvety felt that shimmers in copper and cinnamon tones on top, with a silvery-white underside. It grows in an upright, clustering habit, gradually building into a multi-stemmed specimen over time. The felted texture gives it several common nicknames, including cinnamon bear plant, leather plant succulent, and shoe leather kalanchoe.

Small tubular yellow flowers emerge on tall stalks above the foliage in late winter to spring. It needs a nighttime temperature drop to trigger blooming, so moving it to a cooler spot in autumn can encourage flowering.

Copper Spoons works on sunny windowsills, shelves, and outdoor summer arrangements. Move it outside once temperatures stay reliably warm, then bring it back in before autumn rains arrive, as it dislikes sitting in wet conditions. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it on a high shelf away from cats and dogs, which should not ingest it.

  •   Kalanchoe orgyalis Copper Spoons grows well in bright indirect light to full sun, with a few hours of direct sun daily.

Water it every 10-14 days in spring and summer, then reduce to once every 3-4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Copper Spoons does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with 20-30% perlite or coarse grit.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and should be protected from anything below 50°F, as it has no frost tolerance.

Copper Spoons is a slow to moderate grower, benefiting from light balanced succulent fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b-11, tolerating lows only to around 25-30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern and coastal California, southern Texas, Arizona, Nevada's lower elevations, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Sheltered microclimates in coastal Oregon, the Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, and Arkansas can also support it through mild winters with extra protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Kalanchoe orgyalis Copper Spoons?
A: Water every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Cut back in winter to once every 3-4 weeks. Wilting only indicates underwatering if the soil is bone dry.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Kalanchoe orgyalis Copper Spoons should be kept well out of reach of cats and dogs, which should not nibble or ingest it. A high shelf is the safest spot in a pet-friendly home.

Q: How much light does Copper Spoons need?
A: Intense south-facing windows can scorch the felted leaves if unfiltered, so rotate the pot regularly for even growth and to prevent leaf bleaching.

Q: How big does it get?
A: Copper Spoons typically reaches 2-4 feet tall indoors over several years, growing in an upright, clustering form.

Q: Can Copper Spoons grow outdoors?
A: Move it outside in summer, but bring it back in before temperatures drop below 50°F and shelter it from heavy rain. It grows year-round outdoors in USDA zones 9b-11.

Q: What triggers blooming in this plant?
A: Copper Spoons needs a nighttime temperature drop of around 10-15°F in autumn to set flowers. Moving it to a cooler room or porch in early autumn typically prompts yellow blooms in late winter to spring.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
