  •   Kalanchoe Pumila, also called Flower Dust Plant, is a succulent native to the highlands of Madagascar. It belongs to the Kalanchoe genus within the Crassulaceae family, where it grows naturally on rocky slopes and well-drained hillsides. This drought-tolerant trailing succulent is favored by indoor plant growers for its low maintenance needs and powdery foliage.

The plant is recognizable by its powdery, silver-white coating that dusts every leaf and stem. Small, scallop-edged leaves form compact rosettes that spread into a trailing, clumping habit, making it suited for hanging baskets and cascading displays. The frosted texture of the foliage catches light and remains visually consistent year-round, even when not in bloom.

It produces clusters of small pink-violet flowers, typically blooming in late winter to early spring. The blooms stand out against the silver foliage and appear most consistently when the plant experiences a drop in night temperatures for several weeks during autumn. A cool windowsill in fall helps trigger flowering, and bright light combined with slightly reduced watering during this period encourages blooms to appear.

Its trailing growth habit makes it an ideal hanging basket succulent that can also be rotated periodically for even development. Move it outside in summer to a bright spot with partial sun, and bring it back indoors before temperatures fall below 50°F in autumn. Keep it away from cats and dogs, as the sap can cause skin or paw irritation with direct contact. People sensitive to pollen should note that it does produce allergens during the blooming season.

  •   Kalanchoe Pumila grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, ideally near a south or east-facing window.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Kalanchoe Pumila does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and should be protected from frost below 50°F.

Kalanchoe Pumila is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief cold snaps but not sustained frost below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Gardeners along the mild Oregon and Washington coasts, as well as parts of New Mexico and coastal North Carolina, can also cultivate it outside with minimal protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Kalanchoe Pumila?
A: Every 10-14 days is the standard schedule, but check that the soil is bone-dry before watering again. As a succulent, it handles underwatering far better than overwatering.

Q: Does this plant need special humidity?
A: Kalanchoe Pumila prefers dry air and actually dislikes humidity. It grows best in normal indoor conditions without any misting or humidifying.

Q: Can Kalanchoe Pumila grow in a hanging basket?
A: Its trailing, clumping growth habit makes it well-suited for hanging baskets, though rotating it periodically ensures balanced growth on all sides.

Q: How do I encourage blooming?
A: Kalanchoe Pumila needs several weeks of cooler autumn nights to flower. Position it on a bright, cool windowsill in fall, and reduce watering slightly during this period to trigger flower development.

Q: Is Flower Dust Plant toxic to pets?
A: Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs. The sap can cause skin or paw irritation with direct contact, so placement on a high shelf is essential.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Flower Dust Plant stem cuttings propagate easily. Allow the cut end to callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent mix and water sparingly until roots establish.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
