  •   Kalanchoe 'Flapjacks', also called Flapjack Plant, is a drought-tolerant succulent from the Crassulaceae family native to the rocky, arid regions of South Africa. It belongs to the Kalanchoe genus and grows well indoors and outdoors with minimal attention.

Flapjacks is recognizable by its large, paddle-shaped leaves arranged in a flat rosette pattern that gradually fills a pot with multiple rosettes as it matures. The foliage is silvery-green with red-tipped edges that deepen in intensity with more direct sun exposure, and the leaves feel fleshy and waxy to the touch, built to store water in arid climates.

When conditions are right, it produces tall flower stalks topped with clusters of small yellow-orange blooms, typically appearing in late winter to early spring. A drop in nighttime temperatures in autumn acts as a trigger for flowering, so moving the plant to a cooler spot around 50 to 55°F during fall can encourage blooms.

Flapjacks grows well on sunny windowsills, patio containers, and garden beds once temperatures warm. It handles the dry air of centrally heated homes well but should stay clear of direct vents from heating or cooling systems. The plant is toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it on a high shelf or out-of-reach location away from curious pets and small children. Propagation is simple, with new plants easily started from a single leaf or offset allowed to callous over before being set on dry succulent soil.

  •   Kalanchoe Flapjacks Succulent grows well in bright indirect light and partial to full sun, with south or west-facing windows bringing out deeper red tipping on the leaves.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days in summer and reduce to once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Flapjacks does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand to prevent soggy roots.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F.

Flapjacks is a moderate grower that benefits from a diluted balanced succulent fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11 and tolerates brief dips to around 25 to 30°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, and along the mild coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington. Parts of New Mexico, Arkansas, and the warmer pockets of North Carolina also fall within this range.
  • Q: How often should I water Kalanchoe Flapjacks Succulent?
A: Every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, letting the soil dry completely. In winter, reduce to once every 3 to 4 weeks.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Kalanchoe Flapjacks Succulent is toxic to cats and dogs, so place it on a high shelf well out of their reach. The sap can also cause mild skin or paw irritation on contact.

Q: What window direction works best for Flapjacks?
A: A south or west-facing window with several hours of direct sun will bring out the red tipping on the leaves most intensely. East or north-facing windows work if supplemented with grow light.

Q: How do I get blooms on this plant?
A: Flapjacks flowers when exposed to cooler nighttime temperatures in autumn, ideally around 50 to 55°F. Provide this temperature shift in fall to trigger bud set for late winter or early spring blooms.

Q: How do I propagate Flapjack Plant?
A: Remove a healthy leaf or offset from the base and let the cut end callous over for a day or two. Place it on top of dry succulent soil and mist lightly until roots develop.

Q: Why are the leaves on this plant turning yellow?
A: Flapjack Plant develops yellow leaves when overwatered or roots sit in wet soil. Let the soil dry out completely, ensure your pot has drainage holes, and reduce watering frequency.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
