  •   Succulent Haworthia Savanna (Gasteria batesiana) is a compact, slow-growing succulent native to the rocky grasslands and savanna regions of South Africa. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and grows naturally in sheltered spots beneath shrubs and stones, where light is filtered and soil stays gritty and fast-draining.

The leaves are thick, tongue-shaped, and dark green, covered in raised white or pale green tubercles that give the surface a bumpy texture. They grow in a stacked, rosette-like arrangement that gradually fans out as the plant matures, staying compact and low with leaves rarely exceeding a few inches in length. Haworthia 'Savanna' keeps its tight form over time, making it suited for shelves, desks, and small spaces.

It produces tubular, coral-to-pink flowers on a slender arching stem, typically in late winter to spring, blooming once a year. A noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures can encourage flowering. This plant is pet friendly, so the non-toxic leaves make it safe to place in rooms shared with cats and dogs.

A heavy pot helps anchor Haworthia 'Savanna', since the roots run deep and lightweight containers tip easily. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F, placing it in a sheltered spot and keeping it covered from rain to prevent waterlogging. It handles the dry heated air near a radiator and fits well inside an open terrarium.

  •   Succulent Haworthia Savanna grows well in bright indirect light or office LEDs but scorches when placed directly in a south-facing window.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, letting the soil dry completely between waterings, and reduce to once a month in winter.

Haworthia 'Savanna' does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil combined with perlite or coarse sand at roughly a 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 60-80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents or direct heat from radiators.

Haworthia 'Savanna' is a slow-growing succulent; feed it once in spring and once in summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F briefly. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Hawaii, and Louisiana, and also grows in parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and along the Gulf Coast where winters stay mild.
  • Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering Succulent Haworthia Savanna?
A: Soft, mushy leaves or a soggy base indicate overwatering. The soil should feel completely dry a couple of inches down before you water again.

Q: Which window direction works best indoors?
A: Succulent Haworthia Savanna grows well in east or west-facing windows when kept a foot or two back from the glass. South-facing windows deliver too much direct sun and can bleach or brown the leaf tips.

Q: Can Haworthia 'Savanna' live in a terrarium?
A: Yes, it works well in an open terrarium with gritty, fast-draining soil. Avoid closed terrariums, since trapped humidity can lead to rot.

Q: Is this plant safe around cats and dogs?
A: Haworthia 'Savanna' is non-toxic and safe for pets. No special precautions are needed in rooms where cats or dogs live.

Q: Can Haworthia 'Savanna' be moved outside in summer?
A: Move it outside once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F, placing it in a sheltered spot and keeping it covered from rain to prevent waterlogging.

Q: How long can this plant go without water during a trip?
A: Haworthia 'Savanna' can go up to ten days without watering. The leaves will look slightly softer or develop light wrinkling when soil has dried completely.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
